The Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator I at Confidential Client is responsible for planning and implementing wildfire prevention programs, including Community Wildfire Protection Plans and Firewise Communities, within Region 6. What You’ll Do
This role supports regional Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) prevention and mitigation efforts. You will plan, implement, and provide technical assistance for wildfire prevention programs—including Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs), Firewise Communities, WUI risk assessments, and fuel management projects. You will coordinate with municipal, county, and federal partners and provide hands-on support for community-based wildfire prevention, outreach, and training.
- Provide technical assistance and coordination for CWPPs, Firewise USA communities, and WUI risk assessments.
- Support planning and delivery of fuel reduction and mitigation projects.
- Collaborate with municipal, county, state, and federal partners to promote proactive wildfire prevention and mitigation programs.
- Deliver conservation and wildfire-prevention education to community groups and stakeholders.
- Assist with regional wildfire prevention training and all-hazards response training.
- Serve in incident roles during emergency response as assigned (may include Public Information Officer duties).
- Track program deliverables, maintain accurate reports, and complete administrative work per applicable rules and guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or assist the development and delivery of mitigation/prevention programs (CWPP, Firewise, WUI risk assessments).
- Coordinate technical assistance to fire departments, local governments, and community groups.
- Support field delivery of fuel reduction and conservation education programs.
- Maintain program budgets, schedules, and reporting to meet deliverables.
- Participate on regional incident management, prevention, and WUI mitigation teams; support incident assignments as needed.
- Maintain required fitness, training, and readiness for emergency response deployments.
Qualifications
Education & experience
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Range Science, Natural Resource Management, Fire Management, Fire Ecology, Agriculture Leadership, or a closely related field.
- Preferred: Master’s degree in a related field.
- Experience: Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply; prior firefighting, instructor, or wildland fire agency experience is a plus.
Knowledge, skills & abilities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; comfortable working with media and community groups.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and presentation/communication tools.
- Familiarity with GIS applications is preferred.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and build relationships with stakeholders.
- Ability to travel frequently and respond to emergency incidents on short notice.
Certifications & licenses
- Required: Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Preferred: Basic firefighter certification or higher; fire prevention certifications (TCFP, SFFMA) or NWCG credentials.
Other physical & availability requirements
- Ability to walk two miles in 30 minutes or less carrying a 25 lb pack.
- Willingness to respond for extended deployments (14+ days) and work long hours in primitive/harsh conditions when assigned.
- May be required to pass and maintain physical fitness standards (moderate WCT; optional arduous WCT incentive).
Working Conditions & Travel
- Work occurs in both office and field settings; frequent travel within the region is required.
- Role operates within NIMS/ICS and may be assigned to public information, prevention, incident management, fire suppression, or other emergency response functions.
- Field work may require exposure to smoke, extreme weather, long periods standing/walking, lifting, and extended hours.
