What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is hiring for multiple levels in the Water/Wastewater Services Worker series (Assistant, I, II). You will operate, maintain, and repair water and/or wastewater systems and equipment, and perform customer service and meter-reading duties depending on assignment and level.
Core responsibilities include:
- Operate and maintain treatment facilities, pump stations, wells, reservoirs, distribution mains, and collection systems.
- Install, maintain, and repair pipes, valves, hydrants, meters, generators, pumps, and related equipment.
- Collect and perform basic chemical and field tests (pH, chlorine residual, temperature) on water/wastewater samples.
- Use SCADA and other software to monitor system performance and record telemetry readings.
- Perform meter reading, meter installation/repair, field billing input, and customer service activities.
- Perform construction and maintenance tasks using hand and power tools and operate trucks and maintenance equipment.
- Follow safety procedures including confined space entry, lockout/tagout, traffic control, and Cal/OSHA respiratory program requirements.
- Train and/or mentor lower-level workers (WWSW I/II as appropriate).
- Respond to emergencies, overtime, and on-call duties as required.
Who We’re Looking For (Typical Qualifications)
Candidates may be considered for Assistant, I, or II depending on experience and certifications.
Minimum qualifications summary:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Valid California Class C driver’s license (WWSW II requires Class A with endorsements when assigned).
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects (50+ lbs), climb, work in confined spaces, and perform physical tasks in varied weather and environmental conditions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience / certifications per level:
- Assistant: No specific experience required. Completion of coursework in water/wastewater or related utility/public works experience is desirable.
- I: One year of experience equivalent to Assistant OR 12 semester units in water/wastewater + 6 months related experience OR required state certification + 6 months related experience.
- II: Two years of experience equivalent to I OR 15 semester units + 2 years related experience OR required state certification + 2 years related experience.
Required/expected certifications (by assignment):
- Water Services: D1 (within 12 months for Assist), D1 & T1 for WWSW I, D2 & T1 for WWSW II (California State Water Resources Control Board).
- Wastewater Services: Operator-in-Training (apply within 3 months for Assist) and progression to Wastewater Treatment Operator or Collection System grades as listed for I/II (CSWEA/State certifications).
Working Conditions & Requirements
- Regular exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, raw sewage, chemicals, hazardous gases, vibration, and confined spaces.
- Must meet Cal/OSHA respiratory fit program requirements.
- Must be able to travel to multiple work sites across the service area.
- Positions may require shift work, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency response.
- Employees in safety-sensitive roles requiring a commercial driver’s license are subject to DOT drug & alcohol testing.
