Overview

Confidential Client is hiring certified Water System Worker I candidates to support the reliable, safe delivery of clean water. This entry-level Water System Operator role works under general supervision to assist with testing, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, repair, installation, replacement, surface and groundwater treatment, distribution, construction and operation of water system infrastructure. Successful incumbents demonstrate knowledge of policies, procedures and safe work methods relevant to assigned duties.

Build a career with a defined advancement path: automatic promotion to Water System Worker II with D2 and Backflow Prevention Device General Testing Certification. This position is also eligible for up to two incentive pays (5% each) for possession of a Bachelor’s degree and/or D3 certification.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform semi-skilled and skilled duties supporting water distribution and treatment operations.
• Conduct sampling, testing, cleaning and routine maintenance of pipes, valves, meters and related infrastructure.
• Assist with installation, repair and replacement of system components.
• Support surface and groundwater treatment activities and basic operational tasks at treatment and distribution facilities.
• Follow safe work procedures, maintain accurate logs/records and report system issues.
• Occasionally assist in training lower-level public works staff.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• At least one (1) year of full‑time work experience in the testing, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, repair, installation, replacement, construction, distribution or operation of water systems.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a Grade I Water Distribution Operator Certificate.
• Valid California driver’s license (or equivalent license from another issuing government entity).

Compensation & Type

• Employment type: Full-time.
• Salary range (provided): $45,320.30 — $57,857.01 per year.
• Eligible for promotional pathway to Water System Worker II and incentive pays described above.

Selection Process & Additional Info

• Only applicants who meet the minimum qualifications by the application filing deadline may proceed in the examination process.
• The exam may include an application/package review (qualifying) and a practical exam (100% weight). Candidates must score 70% or higher on the practical exam to be considered for the eligibility list.
• Final selection will be made from the established Civil Service eligibility list by the City Manager upon department recommendation.
• Applicants requiring examination accommodations due to a disability should contact the Human Resources Department five (5) business days prior to any scheduled exam.
• Veteran’s preference points may be available; attach DD214 if requesting consideration.
