What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level Water Resources Engineering Specialist to support drainage, stormwater, and hydraulics work for transportation and municipal projects. Reporting to project managers and licensed engineers, you will gain hands-on design experience and contribute to project delivery across Columbia and the region.
- Assist with drainage and stormwater design for roadways, bridges, culverts, intersections, and municipal infrastructure (storm drains, culverts, stormwater management facilities, green infrastructure, erosion & sediment control).
- Develop drainage plans, profiles, details, calculations, and construction-level plan sheets using MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
- Run drainage and stormwater models (e.g., StormCAD) and support hydrologic & hydraulic modeling, culvert/bridge studies, floodplain analyses, and technical reports.
- Prepare permitting documentation, support NPDES/MS4 compliance, and apply SCDOT and local drainage standards and QA/QC procedures.
- Produce supporting quantities, specifications, engineer’s cost estimates, and inputs to scopes and schedules.
- Coordinate with roadway, structures, utilities, MOT, environmental, and other disciplines; attend project coordination meetings.
- Perform design checks, respond to review comments, participate in field visits and data collection, and help deliver accurate work products on schedule and within budget.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline with coursework in hydrology/water resources. Recent graduates encouraged to apply.
- Foundational understanding of stormwater drainage, hydrology, hydraulics, and engineering design principles.
- Ability to prepare accurate technical calculations and clear documentation.
- Strong written communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Team-oriented mindset with willingness to learn DOT and municipal design standards.
- Ability to travel regionally to project sites and meetings (approximately 15% travel).
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or eligibility to pursue EIT.
- Internship, co-op, academic project experience, or up to two years’ relevant experience in drainage, stormwater, water resources, or transportation engineering.
- Academic or practical exposure to MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer/StormCAD, Geopak, ESRI ArcGIS Pro, PC/XP SWMM, FHWA HY-8, Hydraulic Toolbox, HEC-HMS, or HEC-RAS.
- Familiarity with SCDOT design criteria, NPDES permitting, stormwater BMPs, erosion & sediment control, or similar DOT/municipal requirements.
Work Environment & Development
This is a hybrid position based in Confidential Client’s Columbia or North Charleston office. Hybrid arrangements (including up to two remote days per week where approved) are subject to business needs. You will work alongside experienced engineers and have opportunities for professional development, continuing education, and progression toward professional licensure.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation Range: $64,848.58 - $74,112.66 per year
