Position overview
Confidential Client (via Careertakes) is hiring a contract UX Designer III to audit, finish, and publish an internal Figma-based design system derived from IBM's Carbon Design System. This engagement is a defined contract focused on completing the existing Figma library so it can support new internal web and mobile applications. The role emphasizes scalable component architecture, tokens & variables, accessibility, and data-heavy interface patterns.
Project scope & deliverables
This is a concentrated contractor engagement. Key deliverables include:
- Audit the current Figma library and deliver a prioritized completion plan.
- Establish and finalize a consistent variable/token structure and apply it across the library.
- Complete styling and configuration for in-scope Carbon components using Figma best practices.
- Configure properties, variants, responsive behavior, and interactive states so designers can use components without detaching instances.
- Strengthen the Data Table and other data-heavy components (filters, pagination, sorting, selection, bulk actions).
- Create ~3–5 custom components (e.g., navigation, cards) to fill gaps identified during the audit.
- Align Figma assets, naming, tokens, states, and conventions with the Design System Developer for coded implementation.
- Publish the completed library and recommend governance and contribution workflows (request/review/accept).
- If time allows, extend variables/tokens to support a dark theme.
Engagement & review model
- Acting product owner will provide priorities, consolidate stakeholder feedback, and coordinate acceptance.
- Regular check-ins and scheduled UX review points will align progress to scope.
- Contractor is expected to translate product direction into design-system solutions and clearly explain tradeoffs and constraints.
- Senior/Lead UX Designers will make final design acceptance decisions.
Required experience & skills
- 5–10 years of UX/product design or design-system experience.
- Demonstrated experience building, extending, or maintaining a substantial design system in Figma.
- Advanced Figma skills: components, properties, variants, variables, modes, styles, libraries, and prototyping.
- Proven experience creating scalable variable and design-token structures.
- Experience adapting or extending an established design system (not only isolated product UIs).
- Deep understanding of component anatomy, states, responsiveness, and reusable interaction patterns.
- Experience designing complex, data-heavy components (tables, filters, forms, pagination, sorting).
- Ability to create flexible components that support intended use without detaching instances.
- Working knowledge of accessibility requirements and how they affect component design (contrast, focus, interaction states).
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and maintainability.
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain design-system decisions to designers, engineers, and product partners.
- Ability to audit an existing library, identify gaps, recommend a practical completion plan, and execute within an approved scope.
Preferred experience
- Direct experience with IBM’s Carbon Design System or other enterprise open-source systems.
- Experience adapting an open-source design system to an organization’s brand and internal application needs.
- Experience designing systems for enterprise, operational, or internal applications.
- Experience supporting both web and mobile application design.
- Familiarity with relationships between design tokens, CSS variables, themes, and coded component libraries.
- Experience collaborating directly with front-end engineers (React familiarity is a plus).
- Experience defining design-system contribution, review, and acceptance processes.
- Experience creating light and dark themes driven by semantic tokens and variables.
Completion criteria
The engagement is complete when all agreed Figma library components are styled, connected to approved variables/tokens, published for internal use, and ready to support new internal web and mobile application designs.
Contract details & logistics
- Employment type: Contractor (short-term, defined deliverables).
- Location: Remote / Telecommute (work with distributed product and engineering stakeholders). Candidate should be able to participate in regular review meetings aligned to the project owner’s timezone.
- Expected start: Immediately / as available.
- Compensation: Competitive contract rate (determined by Confidential Client). No salary range was provided in the source posting.
What we look for in your application
- Portfolio samples demonstrating design-system work in Figma (component libraries, tokens, variants, published libraries).
- Examples of data-heavy component design (tables, filters, forms) and accessibility considerations.
- Short case note describing a design-system audit you performed and the outcomes.
- Availability for the proposed engagement timeline.
