Role summary & what you’ll do
This is an entry-level Transportation Engineer role supporting the Confidential Client’s Transportation group. You'll receive structured mentorship and hands-on training while contributing to highway and traffic engineering projects across the Mid‑Atlantic. Work will include design support, traffic analysis, plan production, and coordination with multi-discipline teams.
- Assist in roadway alignment, profile and typical section development.
- Produce construction plans (roadway geometrics, maintenance of traffic, erosion and sediment control).
- Support drainage and stormwater design tasks with senior engineers.
- Support traffic signal, ITS/TSMO designs, signing and pavement markings, roadway lighting, and work zone traffic control.
- Run traffic operational and capacity analyses using tools such as HCS, Synchro, Sidra, or PTV products (VISSIM/VISTRO/VISUM).
- Support travel demand modeling and forecasting (e.g., CUBE, TransModeler).
- Perform HSM-based safety analyses and crash-data reviews using HSS, IHSDM, ISATe or similar tools.
- Produce plan sets and 3D models using design software (e.g., MicroStation/OpenRoads/AutoCAD).
- Prepare specifications, quantity calculations, cost estimates and technical documentation.
- Participate in client and public meetings; assist with agency submissions and permitting coordination.
- Conduct occasional site visits for data collection and field verification.
What we’re looking for (minimum qualifications)
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Transportation Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (candidates actively pursuing degree are eligible).
- 0–4 years of relevant experience; internships or co‑op experience preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and work collaboratively.
- Familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification preferred but not required.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
Nice-to-have / preferred skills
- Experience or coursework in electrical / communications systems for transportation projects.
- Exposure to travel demand modeling (CUBE, TransModeler) or traffic microsimulation (VISSIM).
- Familiarity with Highway Safety Manual (HSM) procedures and tools.
- Prior experience preparing plans, specifications and cost estimates.
Compensation & benefits
The Confidential Client provides a competitive compensation package and benefits. The expected compensation range for this position is $70,000 - $125,000 per year (good-faith estimate; actual offer will vary based on experience and location).
