What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring a Transmission Planning Engineer (levels range from Engineer Assoc through Engineer Staff). In this role you will perform planning studies and analyses that support reliable, cost-effective transmission system operation and expansion. Work will include load flow, congestion and short-circuit studies, area-wide reliability assessments, and support for competitive transmission windows and generation interconnection/congestion evaluations.

  • Perform load flow, congestion analysis and short-circuit planning studies.
  • Evaluate transmission system performance and identify reliability improvements.
  • Participate in competitive transmission windows and generation acquisition congestion analysis.
  • Prepare clear, defensible technical reports, study notes and presentations for stakeholders and management.
  • Communicate results and recommendations to cross-functional teams; support policy and financial decision-making.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior engineers and escalate issues as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute transmission planning studies (load flow, contingency, short-circuit).
  • Use planning tools and models to analyze system performance and congestion.
  • Develop area-wide studies to recommend system improvements and mitigation strategies.
  • Document methodologies, assumptions and results in detail to support project justification.
  • Collaborate with operations, protection, economics and external stakeholders (RTOs) to integrate study outcomes.
  • Apply economic analysis techniques where required to inform planning decisions.

Preferred Tools & Technical Skills

  • Experience with PSS/E, PROMOD, TARA and/or Aspen is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of power system analysis (load flow, contingency, short-circuit).
  • Familiarity with regional transmission organizations (RTOs) and interconnection processes.
  • Proficiency in technical report writing and stakeholder presentations.
  • Ability to maintain detailed study notes and model documentation.

Minimum Qualifications & Career Levels

Note: This role is posted across multiple grade levels (Engineer Assoc → Engineer Staff). Minimums below describe the Engineer Assoc level; higher grades require additional experience, education or licensure.

  • Engineer Assoc (Grade 6) — Entry level: Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Passing the FE exam is encouraged. Salary (typical): $84,000.
  • Engineer (Grade 7) — Bachelor’s + ~2 years related experience (or Master’s may qualify for this level). Typical: $86,000–$105,000.
  • Engineer Sr (Grade 8) — ~4+ years related experience (or Master’s/PhD + less experience). Typical: $98,993–$124,940.
  • Engineer Prin (Grade 9) — ~6–8+ years related experience. Typical: $116,255–$145,000.
  • Engineer Staff (Grade 10) — ~8–10+ years related experience; PE preferred. Typical: $145,000–$160,000.

Confidential Client encourages Professional Engineer (PE) registration where appropriate. Candidates with non-ABET degrees may be considered at higher levels with a PE license, and leadership may approve exceptions in limited cases.


Compensation & Location

  • Compensation Grade (reference): SP20-006
  • Compensation Range (posted): $74,551 — $177,503 per year (grade- and level-dependent).
  • On-site locations: New Albany, OH or Tulsa, OK (candidates should expect on-site work per the role).
