What You’ll Do
The Confidential Client is seeking a Tooling Design Engineer I to support mechanical design and tooling for precision electronic and optical assemblies. This is an onsite, full-time engineering role based in Isla Vista, CA.
- Provide mechanical engineering design and drafting using Creo MCAD and Windchill PDM.
- Perform mechanical design tasks and basic tolerance analysis under general direction.
- Support design and construction of tooling and test equipment used for infrared focal plane array packaging in a clean-room environment (fixtures, jigs, test dewars, vacuum packages).
- Collaborate with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure tooling meets technical, cost, and schedule requirements.
- Assist with procurement activities and supplier coordination to validate component conformance.
- Participate in technical reviews and discussions with internal stakeholders.
Qualifications — Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field completed by start date.
- Experience with CAD tools; hands-on experience with Creo is required (on-the-job, coursework, research, or project experience acceptable).
- Ability to work onsite in Isla Vista, CA and participate in in-person steps of the interview process as requested.
Qualifications — Preferred
- Knowledge of tooling for cryogenic electronic packaging and clean-room protocols.
- Experience with additive manufacturing techniques for tooling/prototypes.
- Experience in high-precision optical alignment and assembly techniques.
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA).
- Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5M.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range (good-faith estimate): USD 62,900 — USD 119,700 per year (all experience levels). This role is based in California; the posted range reflects pay transparency expectations for the state.

- Relocation eligibility may be available for qualified candidates.
