What You’ll Do

The confidential client is seeking a Takeoff Engineer to support the Preconstruction team in Midlothian, VA. You will prepare accurate project take-offs and assist estimators to produce competitive, timely bids for commercial and industrial projects involving heat trace and related mechanical systems.

  • Conduct pre-bid document reviews; read and interpret project specifications, drawings, and scopes of work
  • Use on-screen takeoff software to generate accurate quantity take-offs
  • Verify and double-check estimates and take-offs for accuracy
  • Create and maintain estimating and project logs with key deliverables and due dates
  • Request, collect, and verify supplier quotes to determine accurate material and equipment costs
  • Track and update customer and supplier information in the local database
  • Assist estimators with bid preparation and delivery of time-sensitive documents
  • Review purchase orders, change orders, and cost adjustments
  • Communicate professionally with general contractors, owners, suppliers, and internal team members
  • Collect, analyze, and report estimating data and trends for leadership and project teams
  • Perform filing, organizing, scanning, and other administrative tasks as needed

Location & Compensation

  • Location: Midlothian, VA (on-site / office-based with possible project-site visits)
  • Estimated compensation: $73,352 per year (estimated)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science, Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent combination of related education and experience
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction processes and cost drivers
  • Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, plans, and project specifications
  • Strong math, analytical, time-management, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, and common office software
  • Team-oriented and detail-focused

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reading and interpreting plans and specifications for mechanical systems
  • Prior experience with on-screen takeoff tools (e.g., Bluebeam or similar)
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English — preferred

Physical Requirements & Travel

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, stretch, and climb as needed for site visits
  • Ability to travel to job sites, meetings, and other destinations as required
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment on job sites
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 10 lbs
  • Must be able to see, hear, speak, and use hands/fingers for keyboard and phone use
