System Software Engineer

What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is seeking a System Software Engineer to join a fully onsite team in San Diego, CA. You will maintain, secure, and configure Windows and Linux system environments that support mission-critical software. This is a hands-on role focused on system maintenance, cybersecurity compliance, automation, and configuration management.
- Maintain and upgrade system software and firmware for Windows and Linux hosts
- Develop and maintain automation scripts (PowerShell, Bash, Python) to deploy patches and streamline administration
- Implement and verify DISA STIG and DoD cybersecurity requirements, including system hardening and vulnerability remediation
- Execute patch management, vulnerability scanning follow-up, and remediation tracking
- Support software testing, validation, and technical documentation for releases and configuration changes
- Manage software version control, change control, and configuration management processes
- Troubleshoot system issues and support incident response procedures with clear documentation
- Assist with C&A / Authorization documentation, risk assessments, and other compliance deliverables
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including test engineers and DevOps, to integrate system software updates into deployment pipelines
Qualifications
Required (minimum)
- 5+ years of relevant experience in systems or software engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Active Secret clearance required (must already hold an active Secret clearance to be considered)
- Hands-on experience administering and supporting Windows and/or Linux systems in production environments
- Experience with DISA STIGs, DoD cybersecurity controls, patch management, and vulnerability remediation processes
- Familiarity with software version control and issue tracking tools (e.g., Git, JIRA)
- DoD 8570 IAT Level II (Security+ CE or equivalent) or comparable certification
- Strong scripting skills in one or more: PowerShell, Bash, Python
- Experience supporting software testing, validation, and documentation activities
- Ability to support configuration management and software change control processes
Preferred
- Experience with tactical shipboard systems and/or CANES environments
- Experience automating patch deployments across mixed OS environments
- Prior work on DoD or defense-contractor programs supporting cybersecurity accreditation
Legal & location requirements
- This is a full-time, onsite role in San Diego, CA. Candidates must be able to work onsite as required by the program.
- Active Secret clearance is required and candidates will be subject to background checks.

Compensation & Employment Type
- Employment type: FULL_TIME
- Base salary: USD 90,000–110,000 per year (salary range provided by the client)
