System Simulation UI & Graphics Software Engineer
The System Simulation UI & Graphics Software Engineer at Confidential Client is responsible for designing and building real-time, data-driven visualizations and interactive graphical interfaces for managing a large-scale satellite constellation. This role focuses on front-end graphics/UI development, collaborating closely with backend simulation engineers to create responsive, high-performance tools that enable engineers to monitor, configure, and optimize satellite system operations. The position requires expertise in real-time 3D graphics, UI/UX design, and software engineering within a systems engineering context, contributing to the evolution of critical satellite communication infrastructure.

About the Role
Confidential Client is hiring a System Simulation UI & Graphics Software Engineer to own the visualization and interaction layer for two internal engineering tools: the System Simulation Tool (SST) and the System Orchestration and Resource Manager (SORM). This front-end–heavy position sits inside a systems engineering organization and focuses on turning simulation output into clear, interactive, real‑time 2D/3D visualizations and operator-facing interfaces.
You will work closely with simulation engineers (Python/Rust backends) to map high-frequency simulation state into performant, data-bound graphics and UX that scale to thousands of satellites and hundreds of thousands of cells. A games or real‑time graphics background is highly valued — we expect candidates who understand frame budgets, instancing, LOD, GPU rendering, and building UIs that stay responsive under continuous updates.
What You’ll Do
- Design and implement real-time, data-bound 3D/2D visualizations of constellation state: satellite positions, orbits and ground tracks, Earth-Fixed Cells (EFCs), gateways, inter-satellite links, beam/coverage footprints, and contact windows.
- Build time-dynamic controls (playback, scrubbing, time acceleration, scenario comparison) for analyzing simulation runs and comparing architectures or allocation strategies.
- Create the graphical UI for the System Orchestration and Resource Manager to surface allocation, optimization, routing, and scheduling outputs into actionable interfaces (editable inputs, what-if workflows, conflict resolution).
- Implement engineering views: time-series plots, contact/timeline visualizations, heatmaps, and drill-down tables.
- Define data models, schemas, and transport contracts with backend simulation engineers (Python/Rust).
- Make architectural decisions about rendering platforms and tooling, balancing performance, deployment, and long-term maintainability.
- Keep visualizations responsive at scale using instancing, level-of-detail, culling, GPU/shader-based rendering, and profiling.
- Iterate on UI/UX with systems engineers, operators, and stakeholders; prepare customer- and investor-facing demonstration views.
- Establish engineering practices for the visualization codebase: automated testing, CI/CD, packaging, deployment, and documentation.
- Contribute to the evolution of both tools as constellation architecture and operational requirements change.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Game Development/Design, or equivalent professional experience.
- 2–5 years of professional software engineering experience, including UI/graphics development in games or other real-time 3D applications (simulation, visualization, AR/VR).
- Strong proficiency with AI-assisted code generation workflows and fluency in TypeScript/JavaScript (web clients) or C++/C# (engine-based clients); willingness to work across stacks.
- Solid understanding of real-time rendering fundamentals: cameras, scene management, shaders, and frame budgets.
- Experience building responsive UIs driven by continuously updating data.
- Ability to own both visual/UX decisions and underlying engineering implementation.
- Strong collaboration skills to define interfaces between visualization and backend simulation engineers.
- Good software engineering fundamentals: version control, testing, code review, and well-documented maintainable code.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with geospatial visualization frameworks or 3D/game engines applied to non-gaming, data‑visualization contexts.
- Experience streaming large datasets and rendering large entity counts efficiently on the GPU.
- Familiarity with satellite concepts (ECI/ECEF frames, TLEs, ground tracks) — helpful but not required.
- Python experience for integrations with simulation tooling.
- Full-stack experience (data pipelines feeding visualization layers as well as front end).
- Experience building operator- or engineer-facing decision‑support tools and dashboards.
Location & Clearance
- Location: Chantilly, VA (onsite / hybrid as required by project needs).
- ITAR / export-control requirements: To comply with U.S. Government export control regulations (ITAR), applicants must be one of the following: (i) a U.S. citizen or national, (ii) a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), (iii) a refugee under 8 U.S.C. 1157, or (iv) an asylee under 8 U.S.C. 1158. Individuals who do not meet these criteria must be eligible to obtain the necessary authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Learn more: https://www.pmddtc.state.gov
Working Environment & Tools
- You’ll partner daily with Python/Rust simulation engineers; experience defining lightweight service contracts/transport (WebSocket/HTTP/gRPC/streaming) is a plus.
- Typical front-end tech/areas you’ll touch: TypeScript/JavaScript, C++/C# engine clients, WebGL/engine rendering, shader work, GPU profiling, data-binding to high-frequency state, and UI/UX for operators.
- You will make platform/tooling decisions (web-based vs engine-based rendering) based on performance, deployment requirements, and maintainability.
Why Join (Confidential Client)
- Work on challenging, high-impact problems at the intersection of real‑time graphics, systems engineering, and satellite communications.
- Opportunity to shape core engineering tools used for mission-critical system simulation and resource management.
- Collaborative, engineering-driven environment where visualization decisions directly influence product and operational outcomes.
