Role Summary
This is an entry-level Survey Technician role based in Richmond, VA supporting field surveys including wetland, tree, topographic, bathymetric, natural and cultural resource, and construction surveys. This position is on-site and requires regular regional travel (up to 50%). The position is permanent, full-time.
What You’ll Do
This hands-on field role supports accurate collection and documentation of land and resource data to keep projects on schedule and on budget.
- Work collaboratively with field crews to perform wetland locations, tree surveys, topographic and bathymetric surveys, natural and cultural resource surveys, and construction surveys.
- Operate and maintain modern survey equipment and data-collection hardware.
- Capture precise land information and field measurements; verify quality of collected data.
- Assist in summarizing and reporting field observations and data.
- Read and follow maps; navigate by vehicle and on foot across varied terrain.
- Communicate professionally with property owners, agencies, and stakeholders to arrange access and field work.
- Safely operate and maintain vehicles and equipment used in the field (including ATVs and boats as required).
Qualifications
Minimum requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Basic arithmetic, geometry and trigonometry skills sufficient for field computations.
- Comfortable working independently outdoors in a range of weather and terrain conditions.
- Willingness to travel regionally to support projects (up to 50% travel).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate field vehicles.
Preferred qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in surveying, environmental sciences, forestry, wildlife management, arboriculture, or a related discipline.
- Experience or coursework with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Land Desktop, and GIS.
- ISA Certified Arborist or related certifications.
