Substation Engineer
The Substation Engineer will support the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects, performing electrical calculations, preparing detailed engineering drawings, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure cohesive project execution. This role involves developing technical designs, supporting construction packages, and adhering to industry standards while receiving mentorship and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. The position is contract-to-hire and based onsite in Lake Mary, FL, focusing on substations ranging from 69kV to 500kV.

What You’ll Do
As a Substation Engineer you will join a team delivering high-voltage substation projects (69 kV–500 kV). You’ll work under the direction of senior engineers and project managers to develop technical designs, prepare drawings and specifications, perform electrical calculations, and support project execution from concept through construction. Typical responsibilities include:
- Assist in the electrical and physical design of high-voltage substations, including layout, grounding, protection & control systems, and civil/structural coordination
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, one-line/three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Perform electrical analysis: short-circuit, load-flow, voltage-drop, and grounding studies
- Develop technical specifications, bills of materials, and construction packages
- Support the preparation of engineering reports, design narratives, and client deliverables
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and environmental teams to ensure integrated designs
- Participate in project meetings with clients, utilities, contractors, and internal stakeholders
- Maintain project documentation, adhere to quality controls, and follow utility/industry standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC)
- Receive mentorship from senior staff and engage in on-the-job training and formal learning to develop technical skills
- Contribute to continuous improvement, constructability reviews, and project estimating efforts
Qualifications (Minimum)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- 0–3 years of relevant experience (Entry Level / Early career)
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
- Familiarity with electrical codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE)
- Basic knowledge of substation components (transformers, switchgear, relays, protection schemes)
- Strong communication skills and willingness to learn from senior engineers
- Ability to work onsite in Lake Mary, FL (this is a fully onsite role)
Preferred Qualifications
- EIT certification or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- 3D modeling experience (Revit, Civil 3D, Inventor, etc.)
- Experience with substation analysis tools (SKM, ETAP, CYME) and substation design suites
- Knowledge of construction practices, proposal writing, estimating, scheduling, and project controls
- Prior work on brownfield upgrades or substation construction support
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay range: $33.65 – $38.46 per hour (Contract-to-hire)
