What You’ll Do

As a Substation Engineer 1 (Entry Level) you will join project teams working on the design of new high-voltage and extra‑high‑voltage substations and associated transmission systems. This is an early-career engineering role that offers mentorship and hands-on exposure to power transmission design, equipment specification, and construction coordination.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams to develop substation designs and technical specifications for major electrical equipment and installation services
  • Support power transmission modelling, design checks, and preparation of technical drawings and documentation
  • Participate in design reviews with clients and vendors; travel to vendor or site locations as required for construction coordination and field verification
  • Use engineering judgment together with automation and modern tools (including scripting and AI-assisted tools) to streamline calculations, reporting, and documentation
  • Maintain accurate project records and communicate status, risks, and recommendations to senior engineers

Location & Work Arrangement

  • Primary location: Illinois Medical District / Chicago, IL (postal code 60684).
  • Hybrid schedule: typically 3 days in-office, 2 days remote (may vary by team).
  • Relocation: dependent on candidate location, a relocation package may be available.
  • Authorization: Confidential Client does not sponsor U.S. work authorization for this position.

Compensation

  • Base salary range: $62,998 - $90,586 per year (reported by Confidential Client).
  • Total compensation may include benefits and eligibility for discretionary annual bonus (per Confidential Client policies).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (strong preference for Electrical Engineering; Mechanical, Aerospace or Chemical degrees considered)
  • Understanding of electrical engineering principles and practical application to power systems and substation design
  • Familiarity with technical drawings, blueprints and 3D visualization of parts and systems
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to use modern tools (automation, scripting, AI-assisted workflows) with sound engineering verification

Preferred / Valued Qualifications

  • BSEE, MSEE, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited program
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam (Engineer‑in‑Training designation)
  • Experience or coursework in coding, 3D modeling/design, Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel automation
  • Internship or co-op experience in electrical/substation engineering
  • Familiarity designing or developing AI applications or agentic AI workflows applied to engineering problems
