What You’ll Do

We are seeking an Entry-Level Structural Engineer in Fort Wayne, IN to support structural design of steel decking, joists, and joist girders for commercial and industrial projects. You will apply Steel Deck Institute (SDI) and Steel Joist Institute (SJI) standards, perform structural analysis, and provide engineering direction across design, detailing, sales, and production teams.

  • Design steel decking per SDI standards for roof and floor applications.
  • Design joists and joist girders in accordance with SJI standards.
  • Develop roof and floor layouts for retail, educational, warehouse, and industrial buildings.
  • Perform load calculations and structural analysis to verify performance and code compliance.
  • Interpret contract documents and specifications to define product design requirements.
  • Review drawings, RFIs, and design submittals; provide technical direction to detailers and designers.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers of record, fabricators, and estimating teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Review and release engineering work to the detailing team after technical verification.
  • Develop or update engineering tools related to steel deck design to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Evaluate field modification requests and damaged parts for structural integrity and safety.
  • Independently produce drawings and layouts for complex or atypical structures (e.g., double-pitched roofs).
  • Apply AISC, SDI, and SJI codes consistently in daily design work.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (or equivalent qualifying education toward P.E. licensure).
  • Civil Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification with successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Demonstrated interest in structural steel design, with emphasis on steel deck design and experience or familiarity with steel joist design.
  • Solid understanding of structural engineering principles, structural analysis, and load calculations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply SDI and SJI standards.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with internal teams and external design professionals.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, code-compliant designs.

Preferred / Additional Skills

  • Prior experience in steel deck or structural steel design.
  • Civil Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification (or progress toward licensure).
  • Experience with structural analysis or CAD software such as Ansys, STAAD, MathCAD, AutoCAD, or similar tools.
  • Experience designing structural steel for commercial or industrial buildings.
  • Comfortable working in a team environment with engineers, detailers, and technical staff.
  • Interest in continuous learning and becoming fully conversant with AISC, SJI, and SDI specifications.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Contract-to-hire position; hourly pay range: $28.85 - $38.46 per hour.

Workplace & Location
