Role overview
Confidential Client is seeking a self-driven Structural Engineer 1 to support Facilities work at Newport News shipyard operations. This entry-level engineering role will coordinate structural engineering projects that support facility improvements across the shipyard. The role is on-site in Newport News, VA and requires willingness to work in an industrial shipyard environment.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and refine structural engineering specifications for design and operation across metallic, non-metallic, and composite materials.
- Perform structural analyses covering damage tolerance, durability, producibility, cost, safety, design allowables, and structural modeling.
- Specialize as needed in dynamics and loads, stability, stress & fatigue, and thermal analysis.
- Create, validate, and use 3D/digital models to communicate design intent throughout production.
- Use engineering and analysis tools such as CATIA, IDEAS, Siemens PLM NX, ProEngineer, and other specialized analysis applications.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to support facility improvements and equipment/system designs.
- Prepare or oversee technical documentation governing system design, configuration, and operation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in assigned utility and facility systems; participate in design and implementation phases of system projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (0 years experience required with degree); or High School Diploma (or equivalent) plus 4 years relevant experience.
- Willingness to work on-site in an industrial shipyard environment (Newport News, VA).
- Ability to obtain and maintain Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.
- Demonstrated experience in utility plumbing and troubleshooting utility systems.
- Experience creating or overseeing technical documentation and participating in system design/implementation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
- Familiarity with ASME and/or ASCE codes and standards.
- Experience with public utilities or apprentice schooling.
- Hands-on experience with CATIA, Siemens NX, ProEngineer or similar CAD/PLM tools.
Physical & Work Environment
- May require work in office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environments.
- Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and tolerate temperature variances.
- Travel: approximately 0–10% as required by projects.
Compensation & Benefits
- Anticipated salary range (good-faith estimate): $58,877.00 – $67,288.00 per year.
- The posted salary range is an estimate based on location, responsibilities, and role level. Final pay offers consider education, experience, and skills.
