Role Overview

We are working with a confidential client in the Software Development industry to find a Staff Software Engineer based in New York, NY (hybrid-friendly). This is a senior, high-impact engineering role where you'll set technical direction, lead cross-team initiatives, and help shape the platform that powers payments, billing, and ML-driven customer experiences.

What You’ll Work On

• Design and evolve systems that power patient and providerfinancial workflows, billing, and transaction processing.
• Build reliable, event-driven infrastructure for high-volume, low-latency workloads.
• Improve platform architecture, performance, and maintainability to support rapid growth.
• Integrate payment providers and implement reconciliation, ledger, and transaction infrastructure.
• Bring ML and LLM capabilities into production to create measurable product value.
• Reduce complexity across the stack so teams can deliver faster with higher confidence.
• Raise the engineering bar through better design, code review, documentation, and standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for major platform areas and influence the architecture roadmap.
• Lead cross-team initiatives focused on scalability, reliability, and developer velocity.
• Make strong technical decisions in ambiguous contexts and balance tradeoffs pragmatically.
• Design and deliver critical systems end-to-end—from architecture to production operations.
• Partner with product, design, data, and leadership to translate business goals into technical strategy.
• Mentor senior engineers and help level up the team through hands-on collaboration.
• Improve developer experience, observability, CI/CD, and operational excellence.
• Evaluate and introduce new technologies and approaches where they provide durable advantage.
• Produce clear RFCs, design docs, and technical proposals that help teams align and move quickly.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with a history of increasing scope, ownership, and technical leadership.
• Strong track record building and scaling complex web applications and backend systems.
• Deep experience in backend architecture and systems design, especially event-driven and real-time systems.
• Hands-on experience with technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js, MySQL, Redis, and AWS (or comparable tools).
• Expertise in relational data modeling, SQL, and performance optimization.
• Strong architectural instincts and the ability to simplify systems rather than over-engineer them.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence across teams.
• A pragmatic, curious, builder mindset—comfortable moving fast and digging in where needed.

Especially Valuable Experience

• Payments, fintech, or transaction-heavy systems.
• Healthcare, insurance, or other regulated environments.
• PCI, HIPAA, or security- and compliance-sensitive systems.
• Production ML or LLM integration.
• Platform or infrastructure engineering.
• Growth-stage startup experience at staff/principal level.

Compensation

Reported range for this role: $160,000 – $220,000 (final offer will be determined based on experience, scope, and leveling).
