What You’ll Do

Confidential client is hiring a Staff Software Engineer (MPDE) to develop software platforms, automation systems, and data-driven solutions that support optical product development and advanced manufacturing at scale. You’ll build test platforms, automation frameworks, and data tools that integrate with lab and production equipment to accelerate product development and improve manufacturing quality.

• Design, develop, and maintain engineering software for product development, manufacturing process development, testing, and automation.
• Build automation platforms for assembly systems, machine vision, robotics, motion control, and data acquisition.
• Develop test systems for product validation, automated testing, data logging, and performance characterization.
• Create dashboards and analytics pipelines to collect, manage, visualize, and analyze manufacturing and test data.
• Integrate software with laboratory instruments, industrial automation platforms (PLCs, motion controllers), vision systems, databases, and enterprise applications.
• Produce software requirements, architecture diagrams, validation plans, user guides, and support documentation.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with optical, mechanical, electrical, process development, manufacturing, and quality teams.
• Follow software engineering best practices: version control, unit/integration testing, CI/CD, and release management.

Who You Are / Minimum Qualifications

• BS or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.
• 8+ years developing software applications, automation solutions, industrial software, or engineering systems.
• Proficiency in one or more modern languages (Python, C++, or similar).
• Practical experience with version control, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and debugging tools.
• Familiarity with databases, SQL, data acquisition systems, and basic data analytics.
• Strong systems thinking: API design, object-oriented design, software architecture, and system integration.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to produce clear documentation and collaborate across engineering disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting manufacturing, process development, or industrial automation environments.
• Familiarity with machine vision/image processing, robotics, or motion control platforms.
• Knowledge of fiber optics, optical communications, photonics, or precision manufacturing technologies.
• Experience with cloud analytics, AI/ML applications, or Industry 4.0 architectures.
• Experience with MQTT, REST APIs, or industrial communication protocols.
• Experience deploying containerized applications and provisioning infrastructure with IaC tools (Ansible, Terraform, etc.).

Compensation & Benefits

• Base salary range: $152,000 - $191,000 (commensurate with experience; range provided in good faith and may vary by physical work location).
• Total compensation = Base Salary + Incentive(s) + Benefits.
• Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, 401(k), disability, life insurance, employee stock purchase plan, paid time off, and voluntary benefits.

Location & Travel

• This is a remote (telecommute) opportunity that requires approximately 25% travel to the City of Rochester, New York facility. Candidates should be able to travel as required for on-site integration, testing, and collaboration.
