About the Role

Confidential Client is seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist I to support environmental field activities for a multi‑year remediation contract based in southeast Missouri. This field-focused, hybrid-remote role spends most workdays on site providing technical oversight of remedial activities performed by EPA and non‑EPA contractors. Candidates within reasonable driving distance of project sites in Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois, and Madison Counties are strongly preferred.

Estimated salary (provided by source): $66,876 per year (estimated).

This position requires travel throughout southeast Missouri and up to ~30% travel elsewhere in the U.S. for other projects as needed.


What You’ll Do

  • Observe and document field activities of environmental cleanup contractors and subcontractors.
  • Conduct site inspections and collect soil, groundwater, surface-water, and sediment samples.
  • Participate in contractor and project meetings and communicate field conditions to project managers and the EPA Task Order Contracting Officer’s Representative (TOCOR).
  • Evaluate contractor performance against approved plans and project specifications.
  • Prepare accurate field notes, technical documentation, and concise written reports.
  • Coordinate and interact professionally with homeowners, residents, and the public as needed.
  • Travel to potentially contaminated sites across southeast Missouri and to other U.S. sites when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Entry-level or junior-level experience in environmental field work, environmental science, remediation, sampling, construction oversight, or a closely related discipline.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively with multi‑discipline teams and subcontractors.
  • Strong attention to detail; ability to maintain accurate, thorough field logs and technical documentation.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for reporting observations to project managers and government clients.
  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and reliable transportation for frequent local travel.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Ability to obtain required clearances to access military bases or other federal installations if assigned.
  • Ability and willingness to perform outdoor field work in varied environmental conditions and to follow site health & safety protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting or overseeing shallow excavation and managing lead‑contaminated soil.
  • Experience collecting, preparing, and shipping environmental samples to a regional lab.
  • Experience operating or supporting XRF soil screening, drying, and sieving of soils.
  • Experience collecting water samples from hydrants, residential water lines, and wells.
  • Familiarity with EPA Residential Lead Handbook requirements and residential property work.
  • Experience on EPA, Superfund, CERCLA, or similar remediation projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with property owners, residents, and contractors.
  • OSHA HAZWOPER or equivalent site health & safety training is preferred (40‑hour HAZWOPER).

Education & Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geology, biology, chemistry, engineering, or related field preferred.
  • An associate degree or combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree (~4 years) will also be considered.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Frequent fieldwork (walking long distances, climbing ladders, carrying equipment). Tasks include bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, and occasional lifting (up to ~50–75 lbs rarely).
  • Able to work outdoors on uneven terrain and in variable conditions (heat, cold, dust, moisture).
  • Must wear appropriate PPE (safety glasses, gloves, boots, hard hat, hearing protection, respirator as required).
  • Must be able to perform prolonged desk work during hybrid/remote periods.

Location & Travel

  • Primary work area: southeast Missouri (preferred candidates near Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois, and Madison Counties).
  • Hybrid remote arrangement with substantial field time; estimated travel up to 30% annually to other U.S. project sites.
