Position Overview

Confidential Client seeks a Staff Accountant to support audit-focused accounting work in Staples Mill, VA. This long-term, full-time contract role is ideal for entry-level or early-career accounting professionals who want hands-on exposure to healthcare-related audits (Medicare/Medicaid), document review, financial analysis, and compliance-driven reporting.


What You’ll Do

  • Examine Medicare and Medicaid records using desk-based audit procedures to identify discrepancies and support compliance.
  • Review accounting documentation and supporting schedules for accuracy and adherence to audit standards.
  • Prepare and post journal entries and help maintain organized general ledger records.
  • Assist with tax-related accounting tasks (corporate tax and sales tax documentation) as needed.
  • Analyze financial data and audit findings to clarify variances and support accurate reporting.
  • Gather and organize audit materials in collaboration with internal teams to meet project timelines.
  • Prepare workpapers, summaries, and other deliverables used in healthcare audit engagements.
  • Follow established accounting procedures and compliance requirements across assigned tasks.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree plus 2 years of relevant accounting experience, or a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with fundamental accounting principles (journal entries, general ledger activity).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to review detailed financial and operational documents accurately.
  • Good written communication, analytical thinking, and time-management skills.
  • Interest in building an accounting career in a detail-focused, audit-oriented environment.
  • Exposure to tax concepts (corporate tax, sales tax) and familiarity with audit work are beneficial but not required.
  • Healthcare audit knowledge (Medicare/Medicaid) is helpful and can be developed on the job.

Preferred / Nice-to-have

  • Prior audit experience or coursework in auditing.
  • Any experience with healthcare documentation, compliance, or audit software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and common accounting systems.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Estimated salary (from source): $63,087 per year (estimated).
