Role overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Staff Accountant / Payroll Specialist based in Davison, MI to own payroll processing and support general ledger accounting across multiple company entities. This is a full-time role with a salary range of $55,000–$65,000 per year and a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid time off, 401(k) matching, and additional reward programs.


What You’ll Do

This role blends staff accounting with payroll ownership. Main responsibilities include:

  • Own assigned balance sheet reconciliations; research, document, and resolve reconciling items
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and investigate unusual items
  • Maintain and reconcile prepaid expense accounts; prepare amortization schedules and journal entries
  • Reconcile customer deposit and intercompany accounts across multiple entities
  • Prepare and post journal entries; support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities
  • Reconcile information between accounting, payroll, banking, and operational systems
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable tasks as needed
  • Maintain organized supporting documentation for financial reporting

Payroll responsibilities

As the primary payroll owner you will:

  • Process regular and special payrolls (wages, commissions, bonuses, deductions, reimbursements)
  • Review time records for completeness and approval prior to payroll runs
  • Reconcile payroll registers and payroll liability accounts to the GL; prepare payroll journal entries
  • Coordinate payroll-related changes with Human Resources (hires, terminations, pay changes, benefits)
  • Own quarterly and year-end payroll reporting, including Forms W-2 and required filings
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee/payroll information and respond to employee payroll inquiries
  • Stay current on payroll compliance requirements and escalate concerns to management

Internal controls & confidentiality

  • Follow established internal controls and segregation-of-duties procedures
  • Protect confidential employee, banking, payroll, and financial information
  • Identify and report discrepancies, unusual transactions, or control gaps

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • 1–2 years of accounting or similar experience (entry-level candidates with relevant internship experience encouraged)
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and account reconciliations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and ability to work with financial data
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills; able to manage recurring deadlines
  • Comfortable learning and working in multiple accounting, payroll, and operational systems
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; commitment to confidentiality

Preferred experience

  • Direct payroll processing and timekeeping system experience
  • Hands-on experience with bank or general ledger reconciliations
  • Experience in a multi-company environment or reconciling information between systems
