What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring a Software Engineer to build backend services and secure REST APIs that replace manual, document-heavy workflows for a federal agency. You’ll start by owning the backend that processes filer applications — from document ingestion and validation to decisioning — and ship high-quality, auditable solutions that run in production.

• Design and implement backend services and REST APIs in Python (FastAPI or similar).
• Build serverless/cloud components on AWS (Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway, S3) and integrate with PostgreSQL for data storage.
• Implement secure authentication, access control, and audit logging suitable for a regulated federal environment.
• Automate CI/CD pipelines and testing to ensure safe, repeatable deployments.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineers, architects, data scientists) to iterate quickly and improve system reliability.
• Expand the product and technical capabilities as the firm scales — contribute to tooling, processes, and new lines of business.

Minimum Qualifications

• Strong experience with Python and building secure REST APIs (FastAPI, Flask, or similar).
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, S3).
• Solid understanding of relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
• Experience implementing authentication/authorization and designing for auditability in production systems.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, automated testing, and deployment automation.
• Bachelor’s degree (per source). Demonstrable equivalent experience may be considered.

Preferred / Helpful Skills

• Prior experience delivering software for federal or regulated clients.
• Knowledge of serverless architecture patterns and event-driven workflows.
• Experience with containerization, observability tooling, and infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Strong communication skills and ability to document and justify technical decisions.

Location & Clearance

This is a hybrid role based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and requires regular on-site presence in Washington. Applicants must be sole United States citizens and be able to obtain a Public Trust determination for this engagement. The role requires regular commuting into Washington; remote-only applicants will not meet the location requirement.
