About the Role

Confidential Client is hiring an early-career Software Engineer with a strong leaning toward DevOps/platform work. This is an on-site position in San Francisco, CA (100% onsite). You will work in Linux, write Python and shell scripts to automate delivery, containerize services, and maintain healthy build and deployment pipelines used across multiple customer engagements. The role supports engineering teams by reducing manual toil and improving developer experience while applying security and compliance practices.

What You’ll Do

  • Write and maintain Python and Bash automation for builds, deployments, environment setup, log processing, and routine operational tasks.
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs to support product features.
  • Containerize applications and services with Docker; produce clean, small, reproducible images and maintain Compose setups for local development.
  • Administer and troubleshoot Linux systems: diagnose performance, disk/memory pressure, networking issues, permissions, and service failures.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines so commits reliably produce tested, versioned, deployable artifacts.
  • Set up and tune monitoring, logging, and alerts so issues surface before customers do.
  • Support engineering teams day-to-day: unblock broken builds, fix flaky environments, and improve developer workflows.
  • Apply security and compliance best practices (secrets handling, access control, audit trails) consistent with SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001 requirements.
  • Write clear documentation and runbooks others can follow and improve.

Minimum Qualifications / On your first day, we’d expect you to have

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 1–3 years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, SRE, or Software Engineering. Internships, co-ops, open-source, or personal projects are valued; new graduates with strong hands-on experience encouraged to apply.
  • Strong Linux knowledge (command line, filesystems, processes, permissions, package management, SSH, systemd, basic networking).
  • General systems administration experience across Windows, macOS, or Linux environments.
  • Hands-on Docker experience: building images, writing Dockerfiles, multi-container environments.
  • Backend development experience in Node.js, Java, Python, or Go.
  • Experience with REST or GraphQL APIs, microservices, and relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL).
  • Basic frontend familiarity (React, Angular, or Vue.js) is a plus.
  • Ability to write clean automation scripts in Python and Bash.
  • Solid Git skills: branching, merging, rebasing, resolving conflicts, and pull request workflows.
  • Basic networking knowledge (DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP, ports, firewalls, TLS).
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills to explain technical issues clearly to engineers and customers.

Preferred / We’d be excited if you also have

  • CI/CD tooling experience (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins).
  • Exposure to cloud providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP) for compute, storage, and networking.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes concepts (local clusters or coursework).
  • Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform or Ansible).
  • Monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Experience deploying or supporting AI / ML workloads.
  • Relevant certifications (Linux Foundation, AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes).
