What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring a Software Engineer for the R2 Gateway team to design, build, and operate the S3‑compatible API gateway that serves object storage traffic at global scale. You’ll own request-path systems used on every storage operation, focusing on correctness, low latency, and operational reliability.

  • Design, implement, and operate the S3‑compatible API gateway that handles put/get/list/delete operations and ensures API compatibility.
  • Build and run high‑throughput production services (Cloudflare Workers, Kubernetes, or similar) with strong availability and durability SLAs.
  • Own the request path end‑to‑end: authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, and error handling.
  • Write design docs and drive projects from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
  • Improve performance, reliability, and observability while reducing operational toil and ramping into legacy code paths as needed.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations, lead incident response, and write postmortems to raise reliability standards.
  • Collaborate with storage, metadata, networking, and platform teams to coordinate API contracts and capacity planning.
  • Use AI‑assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, and operational workflows.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong software engineering experience building production systems (3+ years preferred).
  • Proficiency in one or more of Rust, TypeScript, or Go.
  • Hands‑on experience with building or operating large‑scale distributed systems with strict latency and reliability requirements.
  • Experience designing or operating high‑throughput HTTP/API gateways (authentication, routing, rate limiting).
  • Solid understanding of observability and reliability practices: monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, incident response.
  • Comfortable participating in on‑call rotations and incident management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for cross‑team coordination.
  • Authorized to work in the US for this position (no employer sponsorship provided for export‑controlled technology if applicable).

Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have Skills

  • Familiarity with the S3 API surface or other object storage APIs.
  • Experience with edge computing platforms (Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, or similar).
  • Background working with Kubernetes and containerized production services.
  • Prior work on API compatibility, backward‑compatible evolution, and high‑throughput request path engineering.
  • Experience integrating AI tools into daily engineering workflows.

Location & Work Model

  • This opening is for Austin, TX (hybrid). Candidates must be able to work from the Austin area as required for on‑site collaboration and interviews.

Why You’ll Like Working Here

  • Work at the intersection of large‑scale distributed systems, storage infrastructure, and edge computing.
  • Significant ownership: lead projects end‑to‑end and see your work run in production.
  • Collaborative culture focused on reliability, engineering craft, and continuous improvement.
  • Opportunity to leverage AI tools as a core part of the engineering workflow.
