What You’ll Do
This role focuses on high-quality software engineering in Python to develop, test, and release improvements for the Ubuntu Pro client — a command-line tool that manages specialist services for Ubuntu LTS systems. You will work with a distributed engineering team, cloud partners, and product teams to deliver reliable, well-tested features that run across a wide range of Ubuntu releases and environments.
- Collaborate proactively with a distributed engineering team to design and deliver features
- Write high-quality, test-covered Python code (unit and functional tests)
- Debug and resolve issues across diverse environments and versions
- Review code and provide constructive feedback to peers
- Investigate problems and propose engineering-led solutions with a focus on interoperability and stability
- Communicate clearly with end users and community contributors to ensure needs are met and documented
- Contribute to documentation, ease-of-use improvements, and community coordination
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, STEM, or related field — or demonstrable equivalent experience
- Strong, practical experience with Python on Linux
- Experience producing well-tested, robust software and writing clear technical documentation
- Solid understanding of Linux system administration and package management concepts
- Ability to think through edge cases, usability, and long-term stability across many target releases
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with distributed teams and community stakeholders
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Experience configuring apt, working with Debian packaging, or managing package ecosystems
- Prior contributions to open source Python projects or experience engaging with open-source communities
- Familiarity with CI/CD systems and testing across multiple target environments
- Exposure to cloud providers and large-scale deployments
