Software Engineer
The Software Engineer at Confidential Client supports the development, maintenance, and delivery of Machinery Control System software for DDG-51 Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers, collaborating closely with U.S. Navy personnel and contractors. This role involves full software lifecycle responsibilities including design, testing, debugging, documentation, and providing both onsite and remote support, with occasional travel to domestic ports.

Responsibilities
You will contribute to the full software lifecycle for Machinery Control System (MCS) software used on DDG-51 Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers. Typical responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, test, install, and maintain MCS and supporting software products.
- Develop and maintain working knowledge of the DDG-51 Machinery Control System.
- Use Microsoft Visual Studio and Git for development and version control.
- Debug, investigate, and resolve software and system-related problems both remotely and onsite.
- Prepare and maintain software requirements, product specifications, user manuals, and training materials.
- Provide distance and onsite support for software issues and software updates.
- Collaborate with U.S. Navy civilian engineers, supporting contractors, ship crews, OEMs, and engineering management.
- Participate in design reviews, system integration, and verification activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering preferred).
- 0–3 years of software development experience using C, C++, and/or C#; candidates with 0 years must show relevant internship, co-op, or academic project experience.
- U.S. citizenship and Active DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance.
- Valid U.S. passport or ability to obtain one upon position acceptance.
- Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time (domestic port visits, typically ~1 week).
- Ability to meet the physical requirements for work in naval industrial environments (see Physical & Work Environment below).
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with the Microsoft .NET Framework.
- Demonstrated experience using C, C++, and/or C# in production or lab environments.
- Experience using Visio to create system/context diagrams.
- Basic knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP and networked IP-based systems.
- Experience supporting and troubleshooting networked systems both onsite and via remote support.
- Familiarity with databases (MS Access, SQL).
- Strong technical writing skills for user manuals and product documentation.
Physical & Work Environment
Work will include shipboard and pierside environments. Candidates must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods, often on uneven, wet, or slippery surfaces.
- Climb vertical ladders, stairs, and steep inclines while carrying tools or equipment.
- Work in confined spaces with limited ventilation and restricted movement.
- Perform repeated bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching overhead.
- Lift and handle materials regularly up to 50 pounds (with assistance for heavier loads).
- See and hear adequately to read technical manuals, identify color-coded systems, and perceive alarms, with or without protective equipment.
- Work in varying environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, outdoor exposure) and maintain balance and coordination on moving vessels.

Compensation & Benefits
- Projected salary range (full-time): USD $65,200.00 - USD $101,950.00 per year.

- Compensation is set according to education, experience, location, clearance level, and contract requirements.
Travel & Clearance
- This role is based in Philadelphia, PA and requires up to ~10% travel to domestic ports for short planned or emergent trips.
- Must be a U.S. citizen with an active DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain one. A valid U.S. passport or ability to obtain one is required.
