Role Overview
Confidential Client is hiring a Software Engineer, NPI to build the lab and test automation tooling that powers new product introduction (NPI) for large-scale hardware fleets. You'll design and ship tools for test orchestration, data capture, analysis, and the automation that moves validated configs from lab to deployment. This role is based in San Francisco, CA and reports into the hardware/software integration engineering organization.
What You’ll Do
- Build and maintain test orchestration and lab automation systems that support hardware qualification and NPI.
- Design and operate results databases and benchmark automation that make qualification runs queryable and comparable across platforms and time.
- Capture and own telemetry, logs, and measurement data at scale; build pipelines to turn manual engineering workflows into reproducible, automated pipelines.
- Package golden configurations and validation suites for handoff to deployment and fleet teams.
- Ship production-quality tooling (Python or Go) and iterate closely with hardware and test engineers to improve workflows.
- Collaborate across software, hardware, and ops to automate CI for hardware validation and enable rapid feedback loops.
What We're Looking For
- Experience building test automation or lab software for hardware programs (NPI, qualification, or manufacturing test systems).
- Proven ability to convert manual engineering workflows into automated pipelines and CI workflows.
- Comfort working with hardware-shaped data (telemetry, time-series metrics, logs, measurements) at volume.
- Strong production-quality programming skills in Python or Go.
- A user-focused mindset: you sit with engineers who use your tools and iterate quickly based on feedback.
- Strong ownership and the ability to work autonomously across disciplines.
Bonus experience
- Hardware test harnesses, BMC/Redfish APIs, or other hardware management protocols.
- Time-series systems (Grafana, Prometheus) and experience designing observability for lab/test environments.
- CI/CD for hardware, benchmark automation, or systems that bridge lab tooling to fleet deployment.
Compensation & Location
- Location: San Francisco, CA (on-site or hybrid as required by the team)
- Compensation range (base salary): $224,000 - $279,000 USD per year
- Employment type: Full-time
Confidential Client is committed to pay equity and transparency.
Working Style & Culture
- You’ll work on high-velocity, high-impact projects where autonomy and ownership are expected.
- The team values first-principles thinking, rapid iteration, and close collaboration between software and hardware engineers.
- If you’re energized by building tooling that enables others to operate at scale, this role will have significant, visible impact.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred.
- 3+ years building production software or lab/test automation (or equivalent combination of experience and demonstrated ability).
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a bias toward action.
