What You’ll Do

This Staff / Senior Staff Software Engineer role sits on an Enterprise AI Enablement team building reusable AI foundations that power enterprise workflows. You will design, implement, and operate production-grade AI systems (LLM-driven, retrieval, and agentic architectures) used across the business. Work is end-to-end — from customer discovery through prototyping, production deployment, telemetry, and iterative improvement.

  • Architect, build, and ship applied AI solutions across high-value workflows (automation, document intelligence, decision support, fraud detection, intelligent assistants).
  • Design and implement agent orchestration systems: harness management, context handling, tool binding, reasoning steps, and business logic execution.
  • Build knowledge retrieval and RAG-style pipelines: indexing, embeddings, vector storage, and relevance ranking to supply agent context.
  • Rapidly prototype POCs and drive them to MVP and production while maintaining operational reliability.
  • Create reusable platform capabilities and tools that enable other teams to adopt AI solutions consistently.
  • Write clean, tested code and unit tests; participate in and lead code reviews.
  • Improve existing systems for performance, reliability, and observability; establish guardrails and compliance patterns.
  • Lead technical design discussions and prepare design documents; conduct impact analysis across applications.
  • Mentor and coach engineers; contribute to hiring and team growth.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to production incidents as needed.
  • For Senior Staff level: advise senior leadership on where AI should be applied, and drive strategic build vs. buy vs. reuse decisions across the portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
  • Staff: minimum ~8 years software engineering experience. Senior Staff: minimum ~10 years software engineering experience or comparable depth.
  • Proven experience leading technical direction for teams across multiple applications.
  • Demonstrated experience engineering AI systems — LLM-driven and agentic architectures, orchestration frameworks, and tool integration.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: object-oriented design, design patterns, data modeling, messaging and system integration.
  • Experience taking ideas from prototype to production in enterprise environments.
  • Track record building mission-critical enterprise applications with high reliability and observability.
  • High ownership, ability to operate in ambiguity, and strong bias for action.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching engineers.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and shipping production AI retrieval systems (RAG, GraphRAG) and embedding pipelines.
  • Experience operating generative AI systems in production at scale (observability, reliability, guardrails, compliance).
  • Deep knowledge of vector databases, feature stores, data contracts, semantic layers, and knowledge representation patterns.
  • Experience building context layers for agentic systems: multi-source blending, context-window management, relevance scoring, and context-quality evaluation.
  • Advanced facility with modern IDEs and productivity tooling.

Working Conditions & Location

  • This role is remote/telecommute with a primary job location of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. The role may require occasional, planned travel to an assigned office (original posting references a Southfield, Michigan office as an example); travel frequency will depend on team needs.
  • U.S.-based employment required. The position may include an on-call rotation.
  • The confidential client values a collaborative, customer-centric engineering culture focused on professional development and continuous improvement.

Culture & Why This Role Matters

  • Join a team that builds platforms for leverage — design once, enable many teams to move faster and more consistently.
  • Work at the intersection of engineering excellence and customer empathy to deliver AI solutions that impact dealers, consumers, and internal teams.
  • Influence strategic decisions about how AI is adopted across the enterprise and mentor others to raise engineering quality.
