Role overview
Confidential Client is hiring a hands-on Software Engineer to develop firmware, backend services and web interfaces used in high‑precision laboratory instruments. You will work closely with engineering, production, quality and service teams to design, build, test and document software that directly controls devices and produces measurable results in lab workflows.
What you’ll do
- Design, implement and maintain embedded firmware for measurement instruments (firmware-level development and device drivers).
- Develop and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs that support instrument operation, data collection and diagnostics.
- Build and troubleshoot Linux‑based software stacks and configure Buildroot images for embedded targets.
- Implement and maintain web interfaces (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) used by operators and service technicians.
- Write unit tests, integration tests and use embedded test frameworks to ensure reliable operation.
- Test software on physical test rigs and in final instrument assemblies; verify device behavior, performance and safety.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to produce required documentation for quality and regulatory traceability.
- Use version control to manage releases and support production: branch, tag and maintain code in source control systems.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field — or equivalent practical experience.
- Practical experience with embedded C and microcontroller platforms (STM32 or similar).
- Familiarity with real-time operating systems (e.g., FreeRTOS) and field buses (e.g., CAN).
- Experience developing backend code in Python and building RESTful APIs (experience with FastAPI is a plus).
- Comfortable working in Linux for development and build systems (Buildroot or similar).
- Experience with unit and integration testing, and familiarity with embedded test frameworks.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail when diagnosing hardware‑software interactions.
- Effective communication in English; ability to work in cross‑disciplinary teams.
Preferred / Nice‑to‑have
- Prior experience in medical device, laboratory instrumentation, or other regulated product environments.
- Hands‑on experience with capillary electrophoresis or similar analytical laboratory techniques.
- Experience with SVN or similar centralized version control systems.
- Familiarity with CI pipelines for embedded and Python projects.
- Ability to write clear technical documentation to support manufacturing and service.
Work schedule & location
- Full‑time role (32–40 hours per week), primarily day shift.
- This role requires on‑site work to validate firmware on instruments and collaborate with production and test teams. Some travel between development and production/test areas may be required.
