Overview

Confidential Client (via Careertakes) is seeking a Software Engineer II to support mission-critical software modernization, development, and deployment efforts for DoD programs. This role contributes to systems engineering, Agile/DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and software quality assurance for strategic capabilities. The position requires hands-on engineering, collaboration with government and contractor teams, and the ability to translate high-level requirements into reliable software solutions.


What You’ll Do

  • Determine operational feasibility by evaluating problem definitions, requirements, and proposed solutions.
  • Translate feature descriptions into detailed technical designs, implementation tasks, and test plans.
  • Write, review, and maintain clean, well-documented code for application features, automation scripts, and test harnesses.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and packaging processes.
  • Perform software quality assurance (SQA) activities, including unit, integration, and performance testing.
  • Conduct peer design and code reviews; incorporate feedback to improve reliability and maintainability.
  • Document designs and implementations using diagrams, flowcharts, and clear inline code comments.
  • Coordinate integration of developmental software into operational platforms and support test & evaluation activities.
  • Research and assess COTS/GOTS tools and emerging technologies for applicability to mission needs.
  • Support system modernization efforts by developing prototypes, evaluating alternatives, and recommending technical approaches.
  • Apply disciplined software engineering methods across requirements, design, construction, testing, and maintenance.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years supporting DoD programs or equivalent defense-related experience.
  • Experience with Agile and DevOps practices, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD).
  • Hands-on experience with software development, scripting, build automation, and test automation.
  • Experience performing Software Quality Assurance processes and activities.
  • Must possess and maintain a Top Secret (TS) clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate with government and contractor stakeholders.

Preferred / Useful Skills

  • Experience with modern languages and frameworks used in DoD systems (e.g., Python, Java, C++, or similar).
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), and cloud or hybrid deployments.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and performance testing.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices and documentation for large, complex systems.
  • Experience evaluating and integrating COTS/GOTS software solutions.

Worksite & Location

This position is based in Nebraska (NE). Candidates must be eligible to hold and maintain TS/SCI clearance and be able to meet any local reporting or on-site requirements dictated by the contract.
