About the Role

Confidential Client is seeking a Software Engineer II (Java, AWS) to join its Elastic File Storage (EFS) / distributed storage team in Boston, MA. You will design, implement, and operate highly available, performant distributed storage services used by large-scale cloud customers. This is a full-time, hands-on engineering role focused on systems-level work, reliability, and scalability.

What You’ll Do

• Design and implement distributed systems components: consensus protocols, replication, failure handling, and recovery.
• Develop systems-level software on critical data paths to maximize performance and reliability.
• Diagnose and resolve production incidents; participate in on-call rotation and capacity planning.
• Build tooling and automation to improve operational efficiency for large infrastructure.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements, perform code reviews, and deliver high-quality solutions.
• Contribute to performance tuning, debugging, and continuous improvement of development and operational practices.

Minimum Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software development experience (non-internship).
• 1+ years designing and developing large-scale, multi-threaded, distributed applications in Java, C++, C#, or similar.
• 2+ years experience in system design or architecture with a focus on reliability and scalability.
• Strong object-oriented design and data-structure fundamentals.
• Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field — or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience programming in at least one mainstream language (Java preferred for this role).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with storage engines, file systems, or block/object storage internals.
• Knowledge of consensus algorithms (e.g., Raft, Paxos) and replication strategies.
• Familiarity with AWS services, cloud-native architectures, and production operations at scale.
• Performance tuning and systems profiling experience.
• Strong debugging skills and experience operating services in production.
