What You’ll Do
The Confidential Client is hiring a Software Engineer I to design, build, test, deploy, and maintain software systems that support research and operational projects in smarter cities, spaces, and health. You will work on back-end services, APIs, front-end components, and databases, and you’ll help deploy and operate applications on cloud infrastructure.
- Design, implement, test, and maintain back-end services, RESTful APIs, and user-facing front-end components.
- Design and optimize data models, schemas, and queries for performance and data integrity.
- Deploy, monitor, and operate applications on cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred).
- Own assigned software components end-to-end from development through deployment and support.
- Produce realistic time estimates, manage priorities, and deliver work with minimal supervision.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and knowledge-sharing.
- Perform field work as required (travel to project sites to collect data, install/configure software on field devices, and troubleshoot deployed systems).
- Conduct technical research, evaluate technologies, and contribute to documentation, reporting, and proposal work.
- Support special projects and cross-functional initiatives as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution; OR a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus two years of applicable software development experience.
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, test, and maintain software systems.
- Experience with backend development, API design, and database concepts.
- Familiarity with deploying and operating applications on cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
- Ability to travel to field sites and perform outdoor field work as needed.
- Unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S.; this position does not provide employment-based immigration sponsorship.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with embedded devices, sensors, or IoT field deployments.
- Experience with modern web front-end frameworks and backend frameworks.
- Practical knowledge of AWS services, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Familiarity with code review practices, testing frameworks, and documentation standards.
Compensation & Work Schedule
- Salary range: $75,000 - $100,000 annually.
- Employment type: Full-time, Exempt (Administrative, Managerial, Professional).
- Workdays/hours: Monday–Friday, approximately 9:00 AM–6:00 PM. Some travel to field sites (outdoor) may be required.
