Role Overview
Confidential client is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to design, build, and ship production-grade AI engineering systems used across enterprise workflows. This role focuses on reusable platforms (agents, retrieval, orchestration) that scale across teams and solve high-value business problems.
What You’ll Do
- Architect, build, and deploy applied AI solutions across enterprise workflows (automation, document intelligence, decision support, fraud intelligence, intelligent assistants)
- Design agent orchestration systems: harness management, context handling, tool binding, and business-logic execution
- Implement modern knowledge-retrieval architectures (indexing, embeddings, relevance scoring) to surface enterprise knowledge for agents
- Rapidly prototype and iterate from POC → MVP → production; build reusable foundations rather than one-off automations
- Write clean, testable code and unit tests; validate against acceptance criteria
- Improve existing code quality, detect defects earlier, and evolve application architecture toward modern practices
- Lead and participate in code reviews; author design documents and ensure documentation is maintainable
- Debug production issues and propose cross-application fixes and mitigations
- Conduct impact analysis for changes across multiple systems
- Contribute to Agile sprint commitments and recommend process improvements
- Mentor and coach less-experienced engineers; participate in talent selection and technical hiring activities
- For senior staff candidates: advise leadership on AI strategy, build vs. buy trade-offs, and where AI delivers the highest business value
Competencies
- Customer Empathy — understand user workflows and translate needs into impactful products
- Engineering Excellence — high craftsmanship, design patterns, and scalable solutions
- One Team — collaborative mindset across functions
- Owner’s Mindset — accountability, strategic thinking, and bias for action
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
- Staff level: ~8+ years of software engineering experience (Senior Staff: ~10+ years) or comparable depth
- Experience leading technical direction for teams across multiple applications
- Demonstrated experience engineering AI systems (LLM-driven architectures, agentic systems, orchestration, tool integration)
- Proven track record taking prototypes to production for net-new products
- Strong proficiency with object-oriented languages and design patterns
- Practical experience with data modeling, messaging, and enterprise-grade applications
- High ownership, ability to operate in ambiguous environments, and willingness to join an on-call rotation
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and building production retrieval systems (RAG, GraphRAG)
- Experience operating generative AI systems at scale (reliability, observability, guardrails, compliance)
- Familiarity with vector databases, embedding pipelines, feature stores, and semantic knowledge representations
- Deep experience building context layers for agentic systems (context blending, window management, relevance scoring)
- Strong IDE fluency and advanced debugging/navigation skills
Location & Workstyle
- This role is TELECOMMUTE / remote-capable with occasional planned travel to an assigned office location if required by the team or local policy.
- Applicants should be located in the United States or meet local work-authorization requirements.
