Overview

Confidential Client (via Careertakes) is seeking a Software Engineer to develop, test, and maintain Machinery Control System (MCS) software for DDG-51 Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers. This role supports naval engineering teams and requires working closely with U.S. Navy civilians, contractors, ship force personnel, OEMs, and engineering management. The position is based in Elkins Park, PA and typically requires about 10% domestic travel to ports (planned trips ~1 week; occasional shorter emergent trips).

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

• Develop and maintain working knowledge of the DDG-51 Machinery Control System
• Design, implement, test, install, and maintain MCS software and related supporting products
• Work in Microsoft Visual Studio and use version control (Git)
• Identify, document, and resolve software and system issues through debugging, research, and investigation
• Provide both remote and onsite support for software problems
• Prepare and maintain new and existing software requirements
• Write, review, and maintain technical documentation (user manuals, product specifications, training materials)

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering preferred)
• 0–3 years of software development experience using C, C++, and/or C#; candidates with no professional experience should demonstrate relevant internship, co-op, or academic project experience
• Active DoD Secret clearance or ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance
• Valid U.S. passport or ability to obtain one after accepting the position
• Ability to travel approximately 10% domestically
• Able to meet the physical requirements for shipboard and pierside work (see Physical Requirements section)

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with Microsoft .NET Framework
• Familiarity with Visio for creating context diagrams
• Basic knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, UDP)
• Experience supporting and troubleshooting networked, IP-based systems (onsite and remote)
• Experience with databases (MS Access, SQL)

Physical Requirements

Employees must be capable of standing and walking for extended periods on uneven or slippery surfaces, climbing vertical ladders and stairs while carrying tools/equipment, working in confined spaces, and maneuvering in overhead or below-deck areas. Manual dexterity and the ability to handle materials up to ~50 pounds regularly (with occasional heavier lifting with assistance) are required. The role may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, and moving-vessel conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be available for qualified individuals.

Compensation & Benefits

Posted salary range (full-time): USD $65,200.00 - USD $101,950.00 per year. Actual compensation is determined by multiple factors including education, experience, certifications, clearance level, location, and contract requirements.
