Position Overview
Confidential Client (IT) is seeking a Software Engineer — Displays to design and deliver operator-facing applications for advanced machine displays. This is an onsite, full-time role based in Dubuque, IA. The position focuses on application-level software (not embedded firmware) built for Linux-based virtual machines using C++ and Qt/QML.
What You’ll Do
You will join a cross-functional display systems team to design, implement, test, and maintain robust display applications and UI frameworks that run on Linux-based platforms.
- Design, develop, and maintain application software and frameworks for Linux-powered display systems
- Implement GUI and system controls using C++ and Qt/QML
- Collaborate with electrical, systems, and test engineers to define software requirements and system behavior
- Work in an Agile environment to plan, implement, test, and deliver iterative improvements
- Perform peer code reviews, troubleshoot issues, and resolve software/hardware interface problems
- Create and run unit and system-level tests to validate functionality and performance
- Use modern tooling (VS Code, Git, Linux build environments) to manage code, builds, and releases
- Contribute to process and tooling improvements to raise software quality and delivery speed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
- Strong object-oriented programming experience (C++ preferred; Java or C# acceptable)
- Experience developing applications for Linux-based environments using VS Code or similar IDEs
- Practical experience with Git or equivalent version control systems
- Understanding of UI/UX principles and application design for operator interfaces
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for software and system-level issues
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
- Ability to translate requirements into maintainable, efficient software
Desired Skills & Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with 2D/3D graphics rendering and visualization
- Familiarity with OpenGL or OpenCV for rendering or image processing
- Experience building GUIs with Qt/QML
- Working knowledge of JavaScript or Python for scripting/automation
- Exposure to full-stack concepts and modern application frameworks
- Familiarity with CAN protocol, MQTT, or other machine communication interfaces
- Passion for building resilient software for rugged, real-world equipment
- Collaborative mindset and eagerness to learn new tools and technologies
Compensation & Logistics
- Salary range: $65,000–$95,000 per year (commensurate with experience)
- Employment type: Full-time, onsite in Dubuque, IA
