What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring a Software Engineer to join the Controls team to develop production-quality, safety-critical software for vehicular motion control in autonomous ground vehicles. You will work on controller implementation, vehicle characterization, monitoring, prediction models, and integration with broader vehicle systems.

• Implement control and actuation strategies for autonomous vehicles.
• Develop and test reliable, safety-critical control software for articulated trucks on highways.
• Characterize vehicle platforms (braking, steering, acceleration) and translate data into model improvements.
• Build and validate onboard and simulated motion prediction models.
• Define clear software requirements and document implementations.
• Implement degraded-operation and fail-safe behaviors for safe driving under faults.
• Tune vehicle controllers using system performance and test data.
• Collaborate with Planning, Hardware, Systems, and Infrastructure teams to evolve a robust control architecture.
• Support the development and deployment of autonomous driving capabilities in production.

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years developing production-level vehicular controls software.
• Production-level C++ development experience.
• Strong background in robotics, controls, and mathematics.
• Track record developing, testing, and tuning controllers for autonomous robots or vehicles (cars, trucks, aerial vehicles).
• Demonstrated focus on vehicle safety and safety-critical development practices.
• Experience working across control systems, software engineering, and vehicle dynamics in production environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience characterizing, modeling, and simulating robotic or vehicle systems.
• Knowledge of control theory (including stability analysis).
• Experience writing low-level drivers and interfacing over CAN, Ethernet, or similar vehicle networks.
• Experience developing efficient software for resource-constrained embedded systems and RTOS environments.
• Background in safety-critical domains (automotive, aerospace, medical) and familiarity with systems engineering and requirements processes.
• Familiarity with formal verification methods.
• Proficiency in Python for tooling, analysis, or scripting.
• Experience with MATLAB / Simulink for modeling and controller design.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base salary (California / SF Bay Area): $145,000–$190,000 USD.
• Total compensation may include base salary, equity, annual bonus, and benefits.
• Benefits may include medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, retirement (401(k)), paid time off, parental leave, wellbeing benefits, commuter benefits, and office perks.
• Actual starting pay is based on job-related factors including work location, experience, training, education, skill level, and interview performance.
