Position Overview
Confidential Client (via Careertakes) is seeking a junior Software Engineer / Full-Stack Developer to join an engineering team that builds desktop and web tools for the utilities industry. This is an entry-level, full-time role based in the College Station-Bryan area (TX). You will work on the application core (modern C++), Node.js native addons, and the React front end. No prior utility or power-systems experience is required — strong software fundamentals, attention to correctness, and curiosity are what matter most.
What You’ll Do
- Implement, maintain, and optimize engineering algorithms in modern C++ with emphasis on correctness and performance.
- Build Node.js native addons (N-API/C++) to move data efficiently between JavaScript and native code.
- Design and maintain relational database schemas and SQL queries for engineering data with attention to integrity and traceability.
- Define clean communication boundaries between Electron renderer and main processes.
- Integrate with external engineering tools, simulation environments, and libraries.
- Validate and process technical data so results are traceable for audits and compliance reporting.
- Write clear software specifications, acceptance criteria, unit and integration tests (C++ and TypeScript).
- Contribute to React UI features that surface calculation results and workflows.
- Investigate and resolve customer-reported issues, tracing problems from UI to native code.
- Participate in code reviews, technical planning, and documentation.
- Grow your understanding of domain-specific engineering concepts relevant to the utilities industry.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience — or demonstrable hands-on experience building software systems.
- Entry-level / junior to early-mid experience level; demonstrated aptitude for learning and collaborating on multi-disciplinary teams.
Required Skills
- Solid understanding of graph representations and traversal algorithms.
- Working knowledge of modern C++ (11/14/17+), data structures, and debugging tools.
- Familiarity with TypeScript and Node.js, including asynchronous programming patterns.
- Interest in front-end development (React) and ability to learn UI codebases.
- Comfortable with Git and collaborative development workflows.
- Clear written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and a problem-solving mindset.
Preferred Skills
- Experience designing and querying SQL databases.
- Exposure to building Node.js native modules (N-API) or native addons.
- Experience with Python for prototyping or data processing.
- Familiarity with Electron or similar desktop application frameworks.
- Experience integrating with Windows third-party software (COM, DLLs).
- Familiarity with testing frameworks (Google Test, pytest, Jest, Playwright).
- Prior work on engineering or scientific calculation software is a plus.
Why Join
- Work on software that ships to regulated utility customers — meaningful, safety- and reliability-focused products.
- Gain cross-disciplinary exposure: C++ core systems, Node.js/Electron integration, React UI, and database design.
- Mentorship from experienced engineers and a path to become a well-rounded full-stack engineer.
- Collaborative, people-first team culture at a growing engineering organization in the utilities sector.
