About the Role

Confidential Client is hiring a Software Engineer for the Collections Infrastructure team to help scale and harden the backend systems that power the product's database capabilities. You will work at the intersection of infrastructure and product to improve database load performance, reliability at P95 scale, and platform features other teams can build on. Expect to tackle high-volume writes, microservices, distributed systems trade-offs, and observability at scale.

This role can be based in San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY. The team maintains regular in-office Anchor Days (Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays); candidates should be comfortable collaborating in person on those days.

What You'll Achieve

  • Within 90 days: understand how Collections Infra supports the product database block and ship targeted performance or reliability improvements.
  • Within 6–12 months: help raise the quality bar through architecture changes, improved observability, or clearer system boundaries.
  • Contribute to measurable reductions in P95 latency or improved throughput for large, centralized workspaces.
  • Help shape Collections as an internal platform by balancing developer ergonomics with end-customer performance and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and operate backend systems that improve database performance and reliability under real customer load.
  • Diagnose P50/P95 bottlenecks; iterate on solutions and validate impact through metrics and tests.
  • Improve observability, testing, and documentation to make future work faster and safer.
  • Build and evolve microservices and data-layer components to support higher concurrency and AI-driven write volume.
  • Collaborate with product-facing teams and senior engineers to align platform changes with customer experience.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals with a focus on performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Curiosity about distributed systems, microservices, and data-layer trade-offs; practical experience is helpful but not strictly required.
  • Practical comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript, or the ability to ramp quickly in a TypeScript/JavaScript codebase.
  • Problem-solving grit and the ability to iterate when the first approach doesn't move P50/P95 metrics.
  • Self-guided learner who uses docs, code, teammates, and AI tools to build context and make steady progress.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

Confidential Client is committed to competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. For roles based in San Francisco or New York City, the estimated base salary range for this role is $150,000 - $200,000 per year. Final compensation will be based on location, role scope, and the candidate’s experience.

Confidential Client provides reasonable accommodations during the application process and is committed to following federal, state, and local employment laws.
