What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is seeking a Software Engineer to advance the capabilities of operational meteorology and oceanography systems used by government partners (e.g., Naval Research Laboratory and the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center). This role focuses on software design, development, testing, deployment to operational environments, and maintaining clear technical documentation.
- Support software engineering teams by writing, debugging, optimizing, and maintaining code modules.
- Collaborate closely with senior developers and operations staff to troubleshoot complex issues and integrate new features.
- Deploy software changes to operational environments and produce deployment/release reports.
- Design, implement, and execute manual and automated test plans (unit, integration, system).
- Track, document, and manage defects using standard issue tracking systems (e.g., Jira, GitLab).
- Create and maintain API guides, release notes, user manuals, and other technical documentation.
- Contribute to quality assurance, code reviews, and continuous improvement of development practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 2+ years of professional software development experience.
- Active Secret security clearance (must hold or be able to obtain/transfer as required).
- Experience writing and maintaining clear technical documentation.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
Preferred / Desired Skills
- Experience with Python and legacy scientific languages such as Fortran.
- Shell scripting experience (Bash, Ksh).
- Solid understanding of data structures and algorithm development.
- Experience developing and running automated test suites.
- Prior exposure to weather or environmental modeling, or experience working in an operational center environment, is a plus.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both team and independent settings.

- Clearance: Secret required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $110,000–$125,000 per year.
