Role overview

Confidential Client (Biotechnology) is hiring a Software Engineer to build instrument-control and data-acquisition software that ships in commercial products and lab systems. You will work on a small, multidisciplinary team integrating cameras, lasers, detectors, motion stages, and DAQ systems — turning experimental requirements into polished, reliable tools used by scientists and engineers.

This role is hands-on: write maintainable Python, design responsive Qt desktop user interfaces, and collaborate across optics, mechanical, and life-science teams to deliver production-grade software.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain instrument-control and data-acquisition software in Python.
  • Develop responsive desktop GUIs with Qt (PyQt / PySide) for operating hardware and visualizing results.
  • Interface with hardware: cameras, lasers, light sources, detectors, motion stages, and DAQ systems over serial/USB/Ethernet.
  • Implement acquisition, processing, and visualization pipelines for image and sensor data.
  • Use Git for version control, participate in code review, and help maintain robust engineering practices.
  • Debug, profile, and improve software performance, reliability, and usability.
  • Document code, interfaces, and procedures so teammates can build on your work.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineers and scientists to translate requirements into well-tested tools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, physics, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Python.
  • Experience building desktop GUIs with Qt (PyQt or PySide).
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative version-control workflows.
  • Solid software-engineering fundamentals: clean design, testing, and debugging.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to work effectively on a cross-functional team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience interfacing software with scientific or industrial hardware (cameras, lasers, detectors, motion control, DAQ).
  • Image processing or scientific computing experience (NumPy, SciPy, OpenCV, or similar).
  • Experience with C/C++ alongside Python.
  • Familiarity with real-time or multithreaded programming and device communication (serial/USB/Ethernet).
  • Exposure to optics, photonics, bioimaging, or biomedical instrumentation.
  • Experience packaging, CI, and deployment of desktop applications.
  • Experience with CAD registration or overlaying imaging data onto CAD/layout data.

What We Offer

  • Work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with top academics and industry experts.
  • Fast-growing company with meaningful product impact.
  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision benefits; parental leave.
  • Equity participation and 401(k) plan.
  • Opportunity to ship software that directly enables new capabilities in biotech instrumentation.

Location & Work Model

  • Location: Boulder, Colorado — on-site / hybrid (role supports presence in the Boulder / Denver metropolitan area).
  • This posting is for work primarily based in Colorado. Candidates should be able to work on-site or in a hybrid model as required by the team.

Compensation

  • Range: $100,000 – $150,000 annually, plus equity. Actual pay is based on experience, skills, and location, and complies with applicable state and local laws.

Keywords (skills & tools)

  • Python, Qt (PyQt / PySide), instrument control, data acquisition, desktop GUI, Git, NumPy, OpenCV, C/C++, multithreading, serial/USB/Ethernet, bioimaging, optics, photonics
