Software Engineer
Confidential Client is seeking a product-minded Software Engineer to develop and maintain LeafEnterprise, a comprehensive platform for pharmacy-benefit consulting and healthcare data workflows. This full-time, on-site role involves full-stack development using Python, React, and cloud technologies, with strong emphasis on modular design, end-to-end product ownership, and delivering high-quality, reliable software that directly impacts client outcomes and company growth.
About Careertakes
👉 Important disclosure: Careertakes is a third-party recruiting platform supporting this hiring process. If selected, you will be employed directly by our client, Insurance (healthcare consulting & technology).

The Role
Confidential Client is hiring a product-minded Software Engineer to build and improve a company-owned platform used for pharmacy-benefit consulting, claims auditing, rebate operations, healthcare data workflows, internal operations, and client-facing products. This is a hands-on, full‑stack role that spans Python command-line programs, back-end services and APIs, SQL and data processing, React/TypeScript interfaces, automated testing, and infrastructure when required.
You will own meaningful products end-to-end: translate authoritative documents (contract amendments, vendor specs, data definitions) into clear requirements, implement correct and traceable solutions, strengthen tests and automation, and operate and improve production services. This is not a ticket-driven role — engineers anticipate risks, investigate defects, and improve delivery and reliability across the product lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and maintain modular platform software.
- Develop reliable Python CLI programs and repeatable operator workflows.
- Build back-end services, RESTful APIs, SQL queries, and data pipelines.
- Create responsive, accessible front-ends with TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS using reusable components and consistent patterns.
- Own assigned products from discovery through delivery, operation, incident response, documentation, and continued improvement.
- Identify authoritative requirement sources and translate them into specifications, data models, acceptance criteria, code, tests, and client deliverables.
- Preserve traceability between source requirements, implementation decisions, calculations, and user-facing results.
- Keep domain logic deterministic, portable, and testable; isolate external providers behind small, explicit interfaces.
- Apply layered-systems thinking (application, service, data, runtime, OS, networking, infra) to diagnose cross-layer defects and prevent recurrence.
- Analyze algorithmic time/space complexity, profile workflows, and optimize measured bottlenecks.
- Use Git, code review, automated tests, user acceptance testing, and CI/CD to deliver maintainable changes.
- Write clear code, API, architecture, operational, and decision documentation.
- Use coding agents and MCP-based tools with appropriate human review, security, and authorization controls.
- Work across Linux/x86-64 and Windows (Linux command-line tools and PowerShell).
- Use SSH and Slurm scripts to submit, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize remote GPU or batch-compute workloads when applicable.
- Support Azure, AWS, containers, GPU, and other scaled deployments when justified.
- Communicate product behavior, tradeoffs, and outcomes clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field — or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, recursion, object-oriented design, testing, and software development principles.
- Strong runtime and memory analysis skills; ability to reason about algorithmic complexity and identify inefficient implementations.
- Proficiency with Python and experience building command-line applications.
- Practical experience with Linux/x86-64, shells and tools, Windows PowerShell, and SSH.
- Experience with Git and collaborative source-control workflows.
- Ability to write, review, and optimize SQL for relational databases.
- Experience building server-side applications and APIs.
- Practical experience with TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS, including component design, responsive layouts, accessibility, state/data flow, and API integration.
- Layered-systems thinking informed by the OSI model; ability to define abstractions and reason across the full stack.
- Ability to design modular software, separate domain logic from providers, choose proportionate solutions, and recognize overengineering.
- Demonstrated ownership of a meaningful software product or project from requirements through delivery or operation.
- Ability to convert authoritative documents into working software and manage ambiguity explicitly.
- Strong written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Sound judgment regarding sensitive data, security, production changes, and AI-generated work.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1–3 years of professional development experience, including internships, research, or substantial product work; exceptional recent graduates encouraged to apply.
- Experience with C or C++, systems programming, concurrency, memory behavior, profiling, or low-level debugging.
- Deep hands-on ownership of at least one software or systems layer and understanding of its interactions with adjacent layers.
- Familiarity with classical machine-learning techniques.
- Experience with Slurm, GPU or HPC, workload profiling, and compute optimization.
- Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, Azure, AWS, containers, distributed systems, or observability practices.
- Experience with coding agents (e.g., Codex) and MCP integrations under controlled review workflows.
- Experience in healthcare, pharmacy benefits, financial analysis, consulting, regulated software, or other contract-driven, data-intensive environments.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $80,000–$100,000, based on experience and demonstrated capability.
- Competitive benefits package and potential eligibility for performance-based incentives tied to software quality, reliability, delivery, adoption, operational efficiency, client value, and documented business impact.
- Paid time off, health benefits, and other standard employee benefits (details provided by our client during the interview process).
Location & Work Authorization
- Location: Austin, TX (on-site).
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Confidential Client is unable to sponsor or assume sponsorship of an employment visa for this position, now or in the future.
What We Value
- Product-focused engineering with a bias for correctness, testability, and maintainability.
- Clear traceability between requirements and implementation.
- Pragmatic solutions: choose proportionate designs and avoid unnecessary complexity.
- Strong ownership and clear communication with product and business stakeholders.
- Respect for data sensitivity, security, and reproducibility.
