Software Engineer - API and Platform
The Software Engineer - API and Platform at Confidential Client is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining a versioned API that serves as the backbone for customer-facing dashboards and AI agent queries. This role involves end-to-end ownership from ambiguous requirements to production deployment, ensuring high performance, stability, and seamless integration with front-end components and data teams. The position offers a unique opportunity to innovate in energy market analytics by delivering a cutting-edge, interactive data platform.

What You’ll Do
You will design, build, and operate a versioned, high-performance API and the production query layer that powers customer dashboards and external integrations for a Confidential Client in the Data Infrastructure and Analytics space. The API is the contract our frontend and external tooling depend on, and it must scale to support complex, agent-driven queries while remaining introspectable and secure.
- Own the public API and query layer: versioning, resource modeling, cursor pagination, sparse field selection, robust filtering, and reliable uptime.
- Support a live, interactive customer portal by supplying APIs that enable charts, maps, cross-filtering, and low-latency dashboard queries.
- Design an agent-friendly, introspectable API surface (OpenAPI, runtime schema) that is safe for automated agents and third-party tooling to consume.
- Implement production requirements: edge caching/CDN strategies, WAF/JWT validation with JWKS caching, per-client rate limiting, authentication against the existing identity provider, and safe cache invalidation.
- Ensure observability across the stack: structured logs, metrics, distributed tracing, and tooling to pinpoint latency across database, API, and edge layers.
- Collaborate closely with the Data Team to design SQL foundations, semantic views, pre-aggregated stores, and refresh cadences that keep large-table queries fast.
- Automate CI/CD, containerized deployments, secrets management, and rollouts that avoid maintenance windows.
Success in the First 6 Months
- The API is documented, versioned, and stable enough that new dashboard pages or agent-driven tools can be built without asking for ad-hoc changes.
- Customer portal pages have migrated to the live API with response times equal to or better than legacy static pages.
- Large-table aggregation challenges are solved with pre-aggregated stores refreshed off the request path on appropriate cadences.
- A single schema is enforced end-to-end from the database to the front end; changes are additive and coordinated to avoid repeated production drift.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience designing and operating APIs consumed by other teams: resource modeling, cursor pagination, sparse fieldsets, versioning, and smooth deprecation strategies.
- Experience maintaining a schema across language boundaries with additive evolution practices.
- Familiarity with golden-file / snapshot testing and the judgment to detect brittle or misleading test suites.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools daily to accelerate production velocity and QA/QC.
- Strong end-to-end ownership: take an ambiguous request to shipped product and iterate with analysts and stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Agent-facing API design experience (MCP servers, OpenAPI-driven tool generation, runtime schema introspection).
- Experience building a JSON query DSL that compiles to parameterized SQL (selector-based filter/sort/aggregate; no caller-supplied SQL).
- SQL Server at scale: columnstore, indexed views, incremental rollups, read routing, and execution-plan tuning.
- Experience running public-facing services: CDN, WAF, JWT/OIDC validation, JWKS caching at the gateway, per-client rate limiting, and cache invalidation tied to refresh cycles.
- Containers in production (Docker + ECS/AKS/Kubernetes), secrets manager, structured logs, metrics, distributed tracing, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience migrating consumers from a vendor BI layer onto an in-house API (extract-parity, parallel-run cutover).
- Background in energy markets (natural gas, crude, NGLs, midstream) is a plus.
- Master’s degree in a technical or quantitative discipline is a plus.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $95,000 – $125,000 per year, plus bonus opportunities (Colorado pay-transparency disclosed).
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage with company contributions.
- 401(k) with 3% company match.
- Flexible Spending and Health Savings Account options.
- Employee Assistance and Wellness Programs; life and disability coverage.
- Direct access to experienced analysts and energy professionals.
- Meaningful ownership of the platform and product roadmap.
- Exposure to proprietary energy infrastructure and regulatory data.
- Dog-friendly office environment.
