Position overview

The confidential client is seeking a full-time Skills Trainer to support Project LIFE — a transition-to-adulthood program for individuals (ages 16+) with disabilities. In this hands-on role you will deliver vocational training, coach independent living skills, and support work-based learning in community and retail settings. This position is based at the Lawrenceville Workforce Development Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

Key details:

• Status: Regular, Full-time, Non‑exempt
• Location: Lawrenceville Workforce Development Center — 118 52nd St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201
• External hiring range: $18.25 – $18.98 per hour (approx. $37,960–$39,478 annually)
• Retention bonus: One-time $1,000 after 6 months of employment
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM (potential flexibility)
• Travel: Local travel to community sites in Allegheny County may be required

What you’ll do

As a Skills Trainer you will support student interns enrolled in Project LIFE during both the school year and compressed extended school year. Typical responsibilities include:

• Employment training support

  • Instruct and assess student learning of job skills in the work environment at ratios up to 1:5
  • Provide task-based training, task analysis, and coaching in worksite tasks
  • Teach socialization and workplace routines that promote independence
  • Use positive motivational strategies to help participants reach goals

• Environmental adaptation & supports

  • Implement educational, behavioral, and developmental supports, including assistive technology
  • Create visual aids, adaptive work illustrations, and universal-design learning supports
  • Modify tasks and environments to enable success across retail, food service, production, and community placements

• Cross-team collaboration

  • Participate as a member of interdisciplinary transition teams
  • Communicate participant progress and recommendations in written and oral form
  • Coordinate with site management and community partners; provide coverage for other team members as needed

• Policies & compliance

  • Follow applicable regulatory guidelines (e.g., Department of Public Welfare, Department of Labor, PA Department of Education)
  • Communicate production/job expectations to participants and meet regularly with business partners to align on needs

Qualifications

Education & experience (required — one of the following):

• Associates degree in Education, Teaching, or a related field AND 3 years relevant experience, OR
• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Teaching, or a related field AND 1 year relevant experience

Required:

• Experience supporting learning for teens and young adults with a variety of disabilities

Preferred:

• Familiarity with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and special education legislation
• Experience with transition-to-employment or supported employment programs
• Special Education certificate

Required clearances, licenses & certifications

• Valid driver’s license, active insurance, and reliable transportation for local travel
• Completion of background checks assigned by the confidential client (including national criminal background check) prior to start date
• Provide current, valid Child Abuse Clearance, FBI fingerprints clearance, and PATCH prior to start date
