What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level Site Reliability Engineer to join its IT development and infrastructure hosting team in Poughkeepsie, NY. In this role you will help maintain and improve mission-critical Z / mainframe environments, support platform availability, and build automation to improve operational efficiency.

  • Assist with installation, configuration, maintenance, and support of Z/mainframe infrastructure and associated platform components.
  • Support operating system maintenance activities, including upgrades, service implementation, and testing for enterprise mainframe platforms.
  • Monitor system performance and availability; respond to alerts and help troubleshoot incidents to restore service quickly.
  • Participate in incident resolution, root cause analysis, and problem management to reduce recurrence.
  • Collaborate with storage, networking, security, and middleware teams to maintain a stable production environment.
  • Develop scripts and automation to reduce manual work, improve deployment reliability, and accelerate operational tasks.
  • Contribute to system documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.
  • Support infrastructure projects for modernization, automation, and platform improvements.
  • Learn platform-specific technologies through mentoring, formal training, and hands-on experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • Basic understanding of operating systems, networking, and enterprise computing concepts.
  • Experience or coursework with programming or scripting languages such as REXX, Python, Java, C/C++, or similar.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn new technologies and enterprise infrastructure platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to Z / mainframe technologies, z/OS concepts, or Linux on Z through coursework, internships, labs, or personal projects.
  • Familiarity with JCL, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, RACF, VTAM/TCPIP, or platform automation concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with automation, scripting, or DevOps practices.
  • Experience with Git/GitHub, Agile methodologies, or CI/CD tooling.
  • Relevant industry certifications or specialized technical training.
