What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help design and operate the backend systems that power content discoverability, search, recommendations, and personalization at scale. You will shape architecture, lead critical technical decisions, and partner across product, data, and ML teams to deliver low-latency, reliable experiences for millions of users.
- Design, develop, and evolve scalable backend systems that power search, recommendations, personalization, and discovery APIs
- Lead architectural decisions for distributed systems with a focus on scalability, low latency, resiliency, observability, and operational excellence
- Build and optimize APIs, metadata services, indexing pipelines, ranking systems, and recommendation infrastructure that support high-throughput user experiences
- Partner with product, machine learning, data, and platform teams to improve relevance, personalization quality, and A/B experimentation capabilities
- Drive platform improvements that enhance developer productivity, deployment safety, and service reliability
- Define and implement engineering best practices around API design, data consistency, caching strategies, asynchronous processing, resiliency, and monitoring
- Identify and proactively address performance bottlenecks, scaling challenges, and operational risks across discovery systems
- Support experimentation and A/B testing frameworks to enable rapid iteration on discovery and recommendation experiences
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership through design reviews, architecture discussions, and cross-team collaboration
- Influence long-term technical direction and build alignment across multiple engineering organizations
About You
You are a seasoned backend engineer with a strong track record of building and operating large-scale, production-grade systems—ideally in streaming, media, or other high-traffic consumer platforms.
- 8+ years designing and building large-scale backend systems and microservices architectures
- Deep expertise in distributed systems design, API architecture, cloud-native patterns, and reliability engineering
- Experience operating high-traffic services in production with strong knowledge of scalability, fault tolerance, observability, and incident response
- Familiarity with search systems, recommendation platforms, personalization systems, metadata services, or large-scale content delivery architectures
- Strong understanding of caching strategies, asynchronous/event-driven architectures, and distributed data consistency patterns
- Experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms and modern CI/CD/deployment practices
- Experience integrating experimentation platforms, analytics pipelines, or ML workflows is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to improve engineering productivity via tooling, automation, and platform capabilities
- Excellent problem solving, communication, and technical leadership skills
- Proven ability to collaborate across engineering, product, platform, and data organizations and to influence technical direction

Compensation & Benefits
The position is full-time and the pay range for this role in San Francisco, CA is listed below. Actual pay will vary based on experience and other factors.
- Pay Range (San Francisco, CA): $203,400 — $235,000 USD (base)
