What You’ll Do

You will design, implement, and deliver a production-grade ROS 2 software stack for a dual-arm robotic manipulation system used in automotive manufacturing and parts production. Working with cross-functional engineering teams, you will take ownership of the software lifecycle from high-level architecture and simulation to real-time integration with industrial robot controllers and 3D vision sensors.

  • Lead design and implementation of a ROS 2 based dual-arm control architecture (nodes, topics, services, actions, lifecycle) enabling coordinated and independent arm motions.
  • Define clean APIs and interfaces for motion planning, perception, and gripper/tool management.
  • Develop and tune motion planning and manipulation algorithms using MoveIt 2 for bimanual tasks, handovers, and collision-aware trajectories.
  • Configure and maintain kinematic models, planning scenes, and controllers for multiple arms and end-effectors.
  • Integrate 3D perception pipelines (point clouds, depth maps, Photoneo PhoXi / RealSense / ZED or similar) for object detection, pose estimation, and scene understanding.
  • Fuse perception outputs into the planning scene to enable grasp selection, re-grasping, and handover strategies.
  • Write production-quality C++ and Python code within the ROS 2 ecosystem (ament/colcon, ros2_control, MoveIt 2 plugins).
  • Establish CI/CD pipelines, automated tests (unit & integration), code review practices, and documentation for long-term maintainability.
  • Work with system integrators and electrical/controls engineers to validate safety, timing, and deterministic behavior in industrial environments.

Required Qualifications

These are mandatory for consideration.

  • Master's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Proven hands-on experience developing complex robotics applications using ROS 2, including lifecycle management (nodes, topics, services, actions).
  • Deep understanding of kinematics, dynamics, and motion planning; extensive practical experience with MoveIt 2 for dual-arm coordination.
  • Strong background in 3D computer vision and point cloud processing (PCL, OpenCV) for manipulation tasks.
  • High proficiency in modern C++ and Python, with experience writing maintainable, testable production code.
  • Experience integrating with industrial robot controllers and 3D vision hardware (e.g., RealSense, ZED, Photoneo).
  • Experience creating and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automated test suites for robotics software.
  • Ability to work effectively within cross-disciplinary teams and to document technical designs clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ros2_control and controller plugins in ROS 2.
  • Prior work on bimanual manipulation, handoffs, or multi-end-effector tooling.
  • Experience with simulation tools (Gazebo, Ignition) and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Familiarity with industrial safety standards and best practices for robotic cells.
  • Background in automotive or parts manufacturing environments.

  • Work location: Warren, MI (on-site or as required by integration/testing cadence).
  • This role will partner closely with on-site engineering, integration, and manufacturing teams at the confidential client facilities.
