What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is seeking an experienced perioperative RN / Surgical First Assistant to support outpatient surgical services. In this part-time, contract role you will deliver safe, patient-centered perioperative care across pre-op, intra-op, and post-op phases and act as a surgical first assistant when required.
- Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments; synthesize findings into an actionable plan of care
- Provide pre‑op education and discharge instructions to patients and families
- Deliver intra‑operative nursing and first‑assist support: maintain sterile field, anticipate scrub needs, open sterile supplies, operate/monitor OR equipment, assist with counts
- Observe patient condition and the surgical team to promote patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes
- Assist with positioning, prepping, foley catheterization, instrument handling, specimen handling, and wound dressing
- Under direct surgeon supervision, perform specified assistant tasks (e.g., trocar insertion, handling retractors, assisting with fascial closure)
- Reprocess equipment if assigned to endoscopy duties
- Coordinate care across departments and serve as a point of contact for patient care needs
- Participate in quality improvement, universal protocol, and unit safety initiatives
- Delegate tasks consistent with laws, regulations, and the competency of team members
Key Qualifications
- Active RN license in the state of practice (or covered by the Nurse Licensure Compact)
- Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program or OR internship (required/preferred per posting)
- Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) or equivalent certification where required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required prior to direct patient care; ACLS/PALS preferred
- CNOR, SGNA, or related perioperative certifications are a plus
- 1–2 years clinical experience; 2 years of critical care preferred for RN-first-assistant candidates
- Demonstrated competency with sterile technique, instrument handling, and patient positioning
- Strong communication, attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure
Preferred / Helpful Skills
- Periop 101 completion or equivalent perioperative training
- Experience in outpatient surgery or endoscopy teams
- Familiarity with surgical counts, sterile processing, and common OR equipment
- Surgical conscience, anticipation of needs, and effective relationship-building with surgeons and OR staff
