Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level Relief Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) to support patient care in Palo Alto, CA. This role performs diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care procedures for adult patients according to physician orders and institutional protocols. This is a full-time clinical role with relief/float duties across general medical floors and may respond to emergency calls.


What You’ll Do

  • Administer aerosolized medications (HHN, MDI, DPI, large-volume nebulizers) and intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV)
  • Deliver medical gases via nasal cannula, oxygen masks, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), and large-volume devices
  • Perform routine tracheostomy care, ventilator weaning, and tube downsizing
  • Assemble, check, and ensure safety and proper function of respiratory equipment and supplies
  • Document assessments, treatments, and results in the electronic medical record
  • Provide airway clearance (CPT, vibratory PEP devices, cough assist, nasotracheal suctioning)
  • Assess pulmonary mechanics using portable spirometry and other bedside tools
  • Respond to cardiopulmonary arrests and rapid response activations as part of the code/response team
  • Provide CPAP/BiPAP and manage invasive ventilation for stable patients using home devices
  • Perform arterial blood gas sampling and analysis
  • Educate patients, families, and clinical staff on respiratory procedures, devices, and disease processes
  • Oversee and precept staff and community college students on general medical floors, as assigned

Who You Are (Qualifications)

  • Entry-level respiratory care practitioner; no prior clinical RCP experience required
  • Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program with an associate degree (Bachelor’s preferred) or currently enrolled in an AMA RCP program
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to adapt messages to different audiences
  • Critical thinker with the ability to analyze data and reflect on clinical practice
  • Knowledge of respiratory therapy principles, cardiopulmonary anatomy/physiology, and common medical terminology
  • Comfortable using PPE and following infection control procedures
  • Commitment to delivering excellent patient experience and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams

Licenses & Certifications

  • RTT / Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) — required (advanced credentials such as RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS, CPFT, RPFT preferred)
  • RCP — California Respiratory Care Practitioner license required for work in CA
  • BLS — Basic Life Support required
  • ACLS — Advanced Cardiac Life Support required

Physical Demands & Work Conditions

  • Category I exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues (tasks involve direct patient contact)
  • Ability to perform patient transfers, assist with airway procedures, and work in acute care environments
  • Work schedule may include 12-hour day shifts and relief/float assignments across hospital units

Compensation

  • Base pay scale: $64.34 - $72.10 per hour
  • Actual pay will be determined based on experience, internal equity, education, specialty, and training.
