Role Overview

This Confidential Client opportunity is for a Rehabilitation of the Blind Specialist (may be filled at Level I–IV). The role delivers counseling, instruction and rehabilitation services to people who are blind or severely visually impaired to increase independence, mobility, communication and employment readiness.

What You’ll Do

• Provide individualized counseling and instruction in independent living skills, Braille, assistive technology, orientation & mobility, and daily living techniques.
• Assess clients’ functional abilities and develop individualized rehabilitation/independent living plans.
• Teach orientation and mobility skills (long-cane techniques, sighted guide, public transit navigation) and prepare clients for dog guide programs when appropriate.
• Deliver instruction in communication techniques (Braille reading/writing, assistive electronics, low-vision aids).
• Consult with medical and rehabilitation professionals to support eligibility determination and comprehensive care planning.
• Monitor progress, maintain caseload documentation per agency standards, and authorize/monitor service expenditures.
• Provide community outreach, training for civic groups and rehabilitation professionals, and develop community resources.
• When applicable (higher levels), supervise or mentor lower-level staff, manage special projects, and lead in-service training.

Qualifications

• Education: Requirements vary by level (examples):
  • Level I: Bachelor’s degree in orientation & mobility, rehabilitation teaching, or related field (or bachelor’s + 1 year disability-related experience).
  • Level II: Bachelor’s + experience in rehabilitation teaching/orientation & mobility (see source for full level details).
  • Level III & IV: Master’s in Rehabilitation of the Blind/Visual Services/Orientation & Mobility plus required years of experience.
• Required technical skills:
  • Proficiency in Uncontracted or Contracted Unified English Braille as required by level (proof via competency test).
  • Ability to teach Braille (including slate & stylus and braille writers) and to instruct on iOS, Android and basic computer/app use.
• Certification/eligibility:
  • Level II–IV: eligibility or certification for CVRT (Vision Rehabilitation Therapist) or COMS (Orientation & Mobility Specialist) via ACVREP or NOMC, or equivalent as specified.
• Additional:
  • Willingness and ability to perform job-related travel.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
  • Background check required for new hires.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current CVRT or COMS certification (ACVREP or NOMC) or National Certification in Literary Braille / Unified English Braille.
• Experience providing community-based training or supervising rehabilitation staff.
• Demonstrated ability teaching Contracted Unified English Braille (where required by level).

• Salary (annual by level):
  • Level I: $49,297.25
  • Level II: $52,589.93
  • Level III: $60,796.16
  • Level IV: $68,701.80
