Position Summary

The Regional Environmental Specialist is a field-based compliance role supporting multiple asphalt, petroleum and terminal sites in the assigned region. You will be the primary environmental contact at site level for routine compliance, inspections, waste handling, spill response, sampling coordination, training, and recordkeeping. This position works closely with corporate EHS, outside consultants, and regulatory agencies on escalated or technical matters.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary day-to-day environmental contact for multiple plants and terminals within an assigned region, advising site management and operators on routine compliance questions.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections and self-audits (tanks, containment, waste storage, stormwater outfalls, spill kits) and ensure corrective actions are tracked to closure.
  • Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste handling: characterization, labeling, satellite/90-day accumulation area checks, manifesting, and coordination with disposal vendors.
  • Support SPCC and SWPPP programs by performing required inspections, maintaining spill response equipment, and helping keep site plans current.
  • Lead or support initial responses to spills/releases and other environmental incidents; assist with cleanup coordination, notifications, and incident documentation.
  • Collect environmental samples and monitoring data (stormwater, wastewater, groundwater, air) and coordinate with labs or contractors; organize data for reporting.
  • Maintain site environmental recordkeeping and compliance calendars to track inspections, training, and reporting deadlines.
  • Deliver hands-on environmental training to plant personnel: spill response, waste handling, stormwater awareness, and practical environmental best practices.
  • Assist corporate EHS and consultants with permit-related site tasks (data gathering, walk‑throughs); escalate permit drafting or technical negotiations to corporate EHS.
  • Coordinate logistics and provide requested site information during agency inspections; escalate technical or enforcement matters as appropriate.
  • Participate in incident investigations and corrective-action follow-up; recommend practical, on-the-ground fixes.
  • Identify and flag emerging compliance risks or regulatory changes observed in the field.
  • Support environmental aspects of capital projects at the site level (pre-startup walk-downs, coordination with site personnel).
  • Perform other environmental compliance support duties across the region as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field preferred; equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.
  • 2+ years of environmental, EHS, or compliance-related experience in industrial, manufacturing, refining, asphalt, or terminal environments preferred; entry-level candidates with strong field aptitude will be considered.
  • General familiarity with waste management, spill prevention, stormwater, and routine environmental compliance. Deep permitting or regulatory-writing expertise is not required.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (frequent regional travel required).
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification preferred, or willingness to obtain.
  • Additional certifications (DOT hazmat, first aid/CPR) are a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Practical, hands-on approach — comfortable walking plant grounds, inspecting containment, and identifying field issues.
  • Good judgment to resolve routine issues and to escalate technical/legal matters appropriately.
  • Clear written and verbal communication for inspection notes, incident reports, and training.
  • Strong organizational skills to track inspections, trainings, waste pickups, and reporting across multiple sites.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and willingness to learn environmental tracking software/apps.
  • Able to work independently in the field with minimal supervision while traveling across the region.
  • Calm, methodical approach to incident response under pressure.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Regularly required to walk plant and terminal grounds, climb stairs and ladders, and access elevated platforms, tanks, and containment structures.
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor weather, industrial noise, and typical asphalt plant/refinery environments; must be able to wear required PPE.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 25–40 lbs (sample containers, spill gear, documentation, PPE).
  • Must be able to respond to spill/incident calls outside normal business hours as needed.
  • Must be able to pass site-specific safety orientation and any required medical or respirator clearance.

Travel Requirements

  • Frequent regional travel — typically 40–60% of the time, including occasional overnight travel to assigned plants and terminals. Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required.

Other Hiring Details & Conditions

  • Employment is contingent on authorization to work in the U.S., a pre-employment drug test, background check, and motor vehicle record (MVR) review as applicable.
  • This role supports multiple site locations in the region and requires flexible field scheduling when incidents or inspections arise.
  • Confidential Client is an equal opportunity employer and maintains a drug-free workplace.
